Hey there, I am new to Star Trek Online and I want to make a very specific build and I want to know from the veterans what will work best character wise.

I want to be able to be big and beefy with awesome defenses so I can get in close and board the enemy ship and then take them out from the inside of the ship. First off is this possible? Can I board people in the middle of combat? (have not seen how yet bit I figure since it happens every five seconds in Star Trek it should be able to happen in STO)

Second off what character should I go for? I already figured out that Cruiser is the best ship, but my question is when in space combat does your captains class really make much of a difference or is just on ground? because so far what I have seen you really just use your crews special ability's in space not yours, then when you get on ground you get your own. Am I way off here? because if this is true and in space your characters class does not play that Much into it I would love to be a Vulcan Tactical Officer but I don't want to take a huge it in my shields while in space because I am not an engineer. So I guess in short Will my shields be a lot weaker because my character is a Tactical officer or not?

Opinions, Comments? thx for any advice or help you can give me.
And yes I realize this is a noob question because I am a noob at this game so flamers please save your flaming for another thread, thx.

Hard to know where to begin here.

To start, yes you will board enemy ships as part of many of the missions you get to do, but no, you don't get to choose when.

Tactical captains get assault buffs (do more damage) in space, engineers get hull repair buffs in space, and science captains get defuffs in space.

Escorts have the weekest shields (capacity wise) but can do the most damage, Science vessels have the strongest shields (capacity wise) and cruisers are in between.

You get more tactical bridge officer abilities in space with escorts, more engineering bridge officer abilities with cruisers, and more science bridge officer abilities with science vessels.

On the ground, each of the 3 types of captains have different kits available to them which give you 4 abilities you can use with each kit...As an example, my tactical captain has the grenade kit so 4 grenades, my engineer has the bunker fab kit, so a med generator, a shield generator, a phaser turret, and a force dome, and finally my science captain has 4 healing powers with his kit.

I like cruisers for both my engineer and my tactical captain, but I love all of the higher level science bridge officer abilities I get with my science captain in his deep space science vessel.

I'd suggest going with a tactical captain, in a cruiser with 3 engineers and 1 science bridge officer in your away team...you can train the 3 engineers with 3 phaser turrets (for a total of 9) and setup your science bridge officer to be a healer/debuffer...in space you'll do more damage with a tactical captain (yes, this is completely open to debate), and the cruiser will give you plenty of bridge officer abilities to keep yourself in the fight, and your team members....

I hope this helps...the best thing I can really suggest is to just get started and adjust as you go...

Good luck out there.

In the freeform space combat no you cannot board other ships. You can however get a bridge officer ability that will let you send boarding shuttles over to enemy vessels to disrupt them - i can't remember it's exact name, it's not something i have ever personally used.

If you want big and beefy it sounds like you want a cruiser as your ship of choice. That doesn't necessarilty mean you will have to play an engineer character, but they compliment each other very well and if you choose to play another class in a cruiser maybe do some homework on the specific officer forum you plan to try and get some pointers. My playstlyle is sticking to standard officer/ship combos, ie Science officer/science ship and so on, but as mentioned there's lots of scope to mix things up.

Also remember it's pretty easy to level alts (though pretty dull since it's all the same content imo) so if you don't necessarily like your first combo you can try something else til you find what gels best with your playstyle. Also, as you level you will get respecs. Don't be afraid to make use of them and try different ship combos with whatever officer you're playing out.
