# 1 Phasor Pistol Update
02-06-2011, 06:20 PM
i know we'll probably never see it, but i think the phasor pistol needs an update... it's way too big. the handle should be smaller, and it should be curved more. it looks like a gull-darn tube of tooth paste.

i will call lazy on this one because there are TONS of 3rd party, free to use 3d models out there already polished by fans with modeling skills. i've seen them. just freakin google "3D Max Phasor Pistol" there's websites like "scifimeshes.com" and others that host a ton of fan content that would be ready to use, plus loads of available freelance artists that would love to contribute to this game.

again, i don't think we'll see it, but this is the feedback forum so i'm putting my 3 cents worth in.

here's a link to a sight that has some excellent meshes ready to use. some of them are in greater detail and more accurate than the STO models, like DS9 and Galaxy class. these artists have real talent.

Hand phasers were last seen (chronologically) in Nemesis, which was in 2379. This is 2409+, over 30 years later. Consider the changes in phasers in the time from 2364-2379 (the time from TNG season 1 till Nemesis), which was all of 15 years. A difference of 30 years would suggest even greater changes have taken place by now.

Free or not, Cryptic must abide by copyright laws, and must also gain the approval of CBS for all in-game designs. It's much simpler for Cryptic to design their own weapons, rather than use someone else's designs(s).

It goes a long way in adding flavour though.

Id much rather them try and slowly trickle in copyright material from the ST universe. For example id love to hear the musical scores from the series added to the game if possible. Flying to dock at DS9 would be so much more awesome with the DS9 music, perhaps added with a docking cinematic...

i don't know why people always use this argument about copyright laws. free MEANS it's open to public domain... there is no copyright. and on other content that is copyrighted by the artist... 9 times out of 10 you only have to email the artist as ask to use their work. that's why its called ART...because the ARTIST retains the copyright, not the brand label he based his work off of. it's a re-expression of an idea. paramount or CBS or anyone else can make no claim to any artistic representation that emulates their content.

that's also why Tila Tequila lost her law suit against people that stole her "private" sex tape. courts ruled that porn star's genitals are in public domain and they have no rights to privacy anymore.

9 times out of 10 people know just enough about copyright law to not make sense.

yeah....right.....30 years of development and greater changes result in hip bone big HANDphasers which seem to be better working when used like a stone age club....

Best and most canon looking handphasers and rifles are the standard ones from tutorial. And, surprise, they are still used by lvl51 fed NPC security....so why not using them in the same way like the type 2 TOS phaser.
Lvling up with the player who prefers a more canon style equipment.

"Free to use" does not mean "public domain." Most artists require credit be given to them, and changes require their permission unless given beforehand. You listed Treckmeshes as a potential source. Did you read what's on their download page?
Quote:
You may only use the meshes for rendering images on your own computer, publishing pictures on your personal homepage or in forums. If you do post the pictures anywhere on the internet you must have credits to the author(s) on the image! You may not distribute these meshes without express permission from the author(s).
I'm pretty sure using a mesh in an MMO counts as "publishing" and "distribution", which definitely requires permission from the author(s). Point being, if it doesn't specifically say "unlimited use" or "public domain", you can't do "whatever you want" with it.

If they were to use "free" models, Cryptic would have to do the following:
  • Contact the author for permission to use at will
  • Edit the mesh to conform with the rest of the game (resize, adjust polies, etc)
  • Contact CBS for approval
  • Make any changes CBS demands (as needed)
  • Contact CBS for final approval (if needed)

If Cryptic uses their own models crafted in-house, they only have to do the following:
  • Create the model
  • Contact CBS for approval
  • Make changes CBS demands (as needed)
  • Contact CBS for final approval (if needed)

I'm not saying it's impossible to use free models, I'm simply saying it's easier for them to make their own. Especially since they already pay people to do modelling work. Using free models not only takes longer, it takes work away from their employees.

Wasn't saying the phasers are right. Just saying that 30 years would mean they'd be different than you were used to.

i used to be into this a while ago.. i know what i'm talking about. that compliance statement on the website is simply a "cover your ass" so they can't be blamed for any wrongdoing IF there IS a lawsuit of some kind. most of the models on that site are there, because the authors DID give express permission for people to use and share. also, there are lots of other places besides that, which have HUGE databases of content ready for download... hundreds of meshes. ships, furnature... you name it.

the reason i mentioned it is because when you're talking about a modification that is proposed by the users, 9 times out of ten unless you have an overwhelming support by the community, the request goes ignored, unless it is a rather simple and easy thing to accomplish. the reason being is BECAUSE they pay their modelers to do the work... its much faster to spend a half hour googling a mesh and downloading it, and converting it if necessary, than to spend 2 or 3 hours or more even, making a whole new one.

so YES.... the idea is to take work away from the modelers... because if it costs significant resources they then have to decide if it's worth their money to fix.
