Upon entering one's bridge, the captain will ask his/her helmsman to set a course to the w/e system, a short "splash screen" showing the ship going to warp and then back to the bridge view where the helmsman will give an eta. During the little splash screen, the ship is in a "warp" state. Meaning that the ship avatar is not traveling through space but is waiting for the player to return to tactical view.
Now here's the kicker, if the player returns to tactical view before the eta, the ship will appear (based on a time/distance formula) between the start and the destination.
Basically, where you enter your bridge is the "start," the end is the destination you selected from your helmsman. As the time counts down, a formula is determining where you would be in sector space. If you return to tactical view before the time counts down to zero, your ship will be placed a certain point determined by the server.

This I like and if an space encounter is occurring it can switch to tactical view,
and the afterwords remain in space based on the distance/time formula?
