Where some confusion might be coming from is the idea that we want duty officers to perform assignment missions. An example would be - send these 3 guys to go find stuff. an hour later they return with stuff. You did not accompany them, it all happens outside of view in the background. While the three are gone you cannot use them for anything else...
Here's some concept UI for receiving new duty officer recruits on your ship.
The idea is that you request a shuttle of new recruits, they show up and then you assign them to active or reserve rosters.
We will most likely revamp the way you get Bridge Officer recruits as well as part of this.
So a shuttle is like a booster pack from a trading card game? You obtain one, rip it open, and get a number of random cards that may or may not work well together. The strategy being finding cards that DO work well together, with matching traits or other attributes.
Bridge Officers are fully featured pets that you can customize, level, and take on away teams.
Duty Officers are predefined crew that occupy an org chart on your ship to perform a specific function (add a bonus). They are not customizable, they do not level up, and cannot go on away team missions with you.

For now, Bridge Officers and Duty Officers do not mix. This may change in the future, but right now they are two completely different types of crew.
What do you think about the idea of hailing your BO for a status update? It would largely just involve having a shuttle interior on the ship interior map and cutting to a shot of your Duty Officer in the shuttle, possibly with a matte background outside the cockpit?
So you go to your ready room, hail the duty team for a status update and get a quick visual of a BO giving you a summary, maybe with emotes that give you a feel for how well things are going. And if they're dead/in trouble, maybe you hail and get a shot of an empty shuttle or something.
Thanks for the info, Salami_Inferno and dstahl! Also, thanks for the pic!
So, it looks like we'll have our current boffs, which we'll be able to assign them into positions in our Senior Staff. Any info on how many Senior Staff members we can/will have? I'm expecting the usual Chief Medical, Chief Engineer, Chief Tactical, etc, but will we be able to have Astrometrics Officer, Transporter Chief, etc?
As for the new doffs, I like the look of the interface (even if it is a WiP), and the idea of how they'll work with our crew. Will different ships have different amounts of doffs? Also, since our doffs will have what look like personality traits, will our current boffs be getting these as well?
The more I read and see about the upcoming doff system, the more I love it. Man, is it June yet?

Something like this perhaps? That's awesome, and I hope there are more innovative ideas coming our way in the future!
Hmm I've got 13 unclaimed reward boffs, ranging from whites to blues...I wonder if they'll convert to whatever new delivery system that may come along?

hi dtashl
on the subject of bridge officers, will this system include a fix or revamp for the long-standing problem of uncommon saurian bridge officers being the only BO's in the game with a space Trait?
Boffs can be trained and assigned to positions on your ship.
Chief Medical Officer
First Officer
Chief Engineer
Etc
There are separate NEW crew members that are your duty officers
These guys fill out your ship's duty roster and give you passives, crafting unlocks, etc
These can not be bridge officers
For lore/RP/nitpicking's sake, I hope there are a lot more than 3 titles to give to the top BOffs. Like if I want a Spock/McCoy setup (Chief Science Officer separate from the Chief Medical Officer) or even just a Spock (Science XO) on the ship. I know most XOs wore Tactical colors, but - just like Captains - it's nice to be able to pull them from other specialities.
