The time for this debate was like 2 years ago when the game was still in development. There are advantages to 3rd person games, and advantages to 1st person games. Space combat in a ship with front and rear weapons clearly favors 3rd. Ground combat can go either, and do it well, but STO is already set up in 3rd person, and they are currently working on making it better. The overhaul to make STO ground combat 1st person way outweighs the possible benefits, and suffers from the loss of benefits of 3rd person, including seeing all the cool uniform options we have, greater tactical awareness, etc.
If they'd gone 1st person for ground combat from the start it could have been just as good or better than what we have, but changing now is not a good idea.
There's no reason why we cannot have multiple forms of combat for those who want it.
Yes there is. Its not as simple as you think it is. Developing a game is not an easy task, nor is incorporating a system that includes first and third person fps style combat. EVERYTHING would have to be redesigned and reprogrammed to support it. Thats not going to happen, nor should it.
this is an online game, not call of duty. changing this to a fps game would kill it very quickly.
It wouldn't necessarily kill it, 3rd person could still be optional. But 1st person without arms and weapons visible and beams starting mid air, no thx.
i don't think a first person is possible with this engine or necessary. something like resident evil 4 and 5 would be nice though, over the shoulder, aim to shoot, stuff like that.
Yes, the engine is quite capable to handle a soft FPS mode. I play STO this way all the time.
Also over the shoulder aim and shoot is coming soon.
Third person shooter mode is perfectly acceptable. it's the cross hairs with the pew pew I want. I want me guys to miss now and again, because I don't think we ever do... at least not for ground combat, unless someone lea[s out of the way... but I haven't seen an NPC do that as of yet.
