now this is a bow to an old game called road rash. the idea is this, 4 tracks, 2 space 2 ground.
can race against npc or players. you cannot kill the other peeps in the race you can just hinder them.
in space you can use shuttles, the shuttles can drop mines and fire beams with 3 skills, knock out shields engines or weps. mines can slow, explode to bounce a player back to crash or disorientate them or creat effects that make you lose control of the vessel your piloting.
on ground you can use newly implemented vessels, small types like scorp fighters or player made ships specifically for this., the weps and mines do the same on ground as they do in space.
the courses are to be big enough for a good lap but not to huge that it takes hours to get around them, waypoints are on the map and you have to pass within a specific radius to ping them to show you arnt cheating. a virtual path placed down for the tracks.
This would be a complicated new mechanic, beyond what most of us would perceive of as a mini-game in the context of STO.
Some MMO's (e.g. LotR Online and to a lesser extent WoW) do have game play modes like this - and do it moderately well, but it's just a novelty and always somewhat klunky in practice. I think STO has enough issues and areas that need polish (like ground combat! ;-) without adding "racing game" metrics.
I am include to agre with Liandras, sounds like Mario Kart... or perhaps more accurately - *exactly* like Wipeout.
yup its meant tobe, but the mechanics are in game via the space part, inertia, snares slows etc, the only dif is the type of map you would play on and the inability to kill anyone, waypoint activations built into maps and a timer. 1st across the post wins and players get to tinker with the power lvls the same way we do with our ships and consoles engines and weps we put on them.
and such a race is already in cannon from voyager.
If you drop the weapons etc there is actualy the semi legal sport of shuttle racing, done by daredevils and lunatics.
They use shuttles with highly upped impulse drives pushing to near light speed limits, which does tend to have some time issue effect on the pilots, not to mention if you overcharge reactors like that they can and at time they will blown up.
As for mechanics for this little sport they are already in game, remember the time travel jump across a star in the second series, that had both waypoints and times build into it already.
As for my Mario karts comment, that was honnest, it really did make me think about it and it is quite fun to play whith friends (preferably slightly intoxicated)
ye my only thought with the weps added to it what ways are there really to add spice to it, and the being able to sabatage others in the race was the 1st thing that came to mind like on road rash where when you were racing you could whack another rider in the head with a metal chain or bar or simply punch them in the face so they fell off.
they could also link this to the ferengis, have it so you can bet lat on the races as an observer, and new trophys if you enter specific races against npc's.
there would have to be some independent way not under player control to either lose control, speed up slow down etc or you might aswell be flying around the sector blocks using the planets you can no longer visit as markers.
