When their gate pop any Borg at came through their gate would had despawn and only two additional cubes would have jump in at your gate. 5 of you should have been able to deal with them easy. Maybe because it was the first time you got that far the surprise over whelm you.

Okay, now I'm confused. I have FAW I, EWP II, and Polarize Hull I on my Star Cruiser. The Sci vessel on the other gate had GW (I forget which version). I don't recall anymore if anybody over there had EWP (it's been too long since those runs now, but I think they did). The point being that our dps must've been miniscule compared to what you guys were putting out to finish each wave so quickly, yet every single member of the team was a VA. If you guys had both GW and EWP (not to mention TR) on your gate, did the other three guys have any AoE?

You might want to upgrade your EWP to version 3. It is trainable by a captain, and is affected by engine maintainence skill and engine performance skill, I believe. I know on my engineer, EWP 3 deals over 18K in damage over 30 sec. That is why GW is important. Not only does GW damage the spheres/probes, but it bunches them together so that you can use EWP on them. 18K damage to all the probes/sphere at the same time is what allows you to clean them out fast. But you need to coordinate the EWP while they are stuck in the GW.

Cap Morgan is a Tactical in the Excelsior. He has EWP3 and EWP1. I think they have another Tac in the Excelsior so he most likely also have EWP3.

They had Gravity Well and FAW/CSV/EWP. That Advanced Multi-vector escort and it's LT. CMDR. Science slot makes it very, very attractive for raids!

Yeah, I've been working on that. As I said, I was on the right gate whereas the Sci ship with GW was on the left gate, so I don't know if they ever got their GW/EWP groove on. I was the only ship on the right side with any AoE. I did my best to spray everybody and usually did a good job - typically killed the probes no problem, but the spheres were noticeably less scathed by it.

UPDATE: I finally managed to finish KA (sort of). Thanks to everyone who offered strategies and advice; I really appreciate it. In case anyone else out there is struggling with finishing it in a PUG, the team I was in adopted the 'everybody sticks together' approach for the first space part. We all stayed at the left gate and hit it with everything we had until its shield went up, then we all worked on the spawn together, using GW and EWP as necessary. I thought it sounded risky, but it worked like a charm - not a single ship got through.
