The only thing I don't understand about the Oberth-class is how the heck you're supposed to travel between the saucer and the engineering hull. I mean, do crewmen just transport between the two sections? There's no way you could fit a turbolift in those pylons connecting them.

It was always my understanding that the lower section was an elaborate sensor array. But no one ever came out and stated this with certainty. The film model never displayed windows down there at all. Most functions were likely within the upper section. If it were up to me the lower section would have a docking port or two for servicing of the section.
