This idea came to me in response to another thread, and I'm curious on some feedback. Would this be fun? and is it technically possible?

In addition to the current dailies I would like to see a weekly challenge added to the queues. Weeklies can be run in their own (new) maps, or in any of the current maps.

Infrastructure
Each weekly has a different set of objectives, and finishing a weekly map, three times would grant 3 emblems or MoH per day. All weekly maps in circulation are available for private matches. Only one map grants emblems per week. New maps and challenges can be added to the weekly rotation, with a minimum of one new challenge every three month.
Give each map a 60 second timer before teams can move, so that every player has time to adjust their power tray. (Ideally, this layout would be maintained for the next time you run this particular challenge.)

Gameplay
The objectives involve powers, skill points and equipment, which is enforced on all players on the map. I don't see how more elaborate rules could be realized given the current system. But ultimately setting specific rules for pvp maps might make a great addtion to the foundry. Until then no choice it is! Ships, weapons, and skillpoints are all set to the same values. Allowing people to try their skills competitively without respeccing.

Yes, I want to force ppl to go e.g. 5 cruiser beam boats against 5 cruiser beam boats with BO3, AuxtoDamp1, and ET1 as the only available BO skills.

Here are the pro's
  • Limiting the effect of broken powers in PVP (CTM, F@W)
This is not to flame, but just trying to find a way around the obvious, there will always be balancing issues. If F@W is broken it should not be available for weeklies.
Give us a change to play with underused abilities
  • Add variety to endgame
    We need it
see if you are as great in a cruiser as you are in an escort if flying against other cruisers/escorts
  • Hopefully little need for developers attention
once the system has been introduced
  • Lower the frustration of new players of PuGing in ground builds against 5 man TSI premades in FoM ships
Nothing wrong with TSI 5 man F@W premades, but they ain't helping motivating PUGers with ground sp to join the queues. Just read the funny PvP chats, and you know what i mean.
Less calling out cheaters, they should be much easier to identify in this setup

Some examples:
Kirk FTW TOS ships around K-7 station, with three BOs powers in Connies and D-7s.
Heavy Blow Arena with escorts/raptor sporting DHC and plasma's with 2xHYT3
spam, egg, bacon, spam, spam dispersal patterns and chronitons galore, sci ship/hippo only

i dont think the idea of limiting what people can use is a good idea (although this is an interesting idea). a lot of people have trouble enough with the ui not remember their own powers and i can imagine the issues of switching from your ship to a different ship etc etc....

I know that, I m not playing to STO's strengths when it comes to the UI, ship changes, and layouts. Ultimately I could envision a very elaborate Version of this, allowing players/DEVs a very fine-grained control about what abilities, ships, equipment, etc, would be available per map in 2015.

For know having only e.g. 3 BO powers should mitigate the pain. How hard can it be to maintain Cpt. powers in their slots, and drag three powers to new places, without messing up the whole layout afterwards?

Thanks for the feedback

I would at least like to have the Private Challenge system allow to set restrictions like this. Tier 2 shuttle_wars FTW.

Being able to fly different ships is the last remaining fun part of this game. Taking that away is good?

You don't lose because you have ground skill points (Tami, back me up here!). My final spec that I currently use includes ground skills, is by no means min-maxed for anything and works fine in space pvp.
And as long as it is possible to out-dps the majority of casual pvp players while using a T3 golfball ship with HYT1+CRF1, I don't think gear is what makes the difference.

I myself have made suggestions to offer players at the beginning of the match the choice of flying a cookie cutter build, but I strongly dislike the idea of forcing players to do so.

I would like to see something like this available for private matchs. Other games have offered more intricate systems that allow the host to establish preset parameters about what skills, items, or handicaps are available. That certainly would make different tiered tournaments and match ups more interesting.

Agreed, added that as potential extension of the foundry. I just don't see that happening before 2012. A set of 4 (6,8,...) maps with handicaps could probably be introduced much earlier.

Yes, it adds variety. you would have two set ups for pvp, one of your design and one prefabed by the weekly. More detailed parameters per map would be great, I just have my doubts if this is possible.

I agree that gear doesn't make much of a difference. Still, offering a lvl playing field across levels, is part of the difference of the weeklies. Hard to predict how much of a difference it will make. But there is no denying that FoM and exploits do keep both Newbs and Vets out of the queues. To be clear, you don't have to join a weekly queue, it won't effect your build for the rest of the game. It's an addition.
