I've placed several Squadron NPC Groups on a map. When I expand the tree view on the map, it shows me aprpox 6 'actors' in the squadron. However, when I play the main only a single ship appear.

Can anybody shed some light as to why? The character I'm playing with is a RALH, so he's definately high-level.

What gives?

They're scaled. For only one player, only one npc spawns. With a full group of players, the whole group spawns.

right, if you want to fight multiple enemys, put more groups on the maps.
Also it depends on what kind of group you use.
A cruiser group spawns one enemy per player.
A fighter group will spawn several smaller ships, mostly fighters, of course.
A weak group spawns 3 frigates/BoPs etc.

Weak group is actually 2 frigates. Frigate group is 3 frigates. However, as they scale they begin to add other types of ships, including eventually battleships (it says in the description).

Then their descriptions are very deceiving because to me it means that it will scale according to the players level, not how many player are on the map. This will also mean that if I increase the number of 'groups' to make it as big a dog fight as I want for a single player, it's going to be a massacre for teams.

It's also contrary to how the groups work for ground missions.

They do both.... The level scales with the leader of the group and the amount of increases with the amount of players.

It doesn't matter if you add more groups to make a large fight, it will still be fine with larger groups because there are more people to fight them. It won't end up being a massacre. The balance remains the same, that's the whole point of the group scaling. It works for the most part.

You shouldn't be seriously increasing the number of groups a single player is fighting at the same time or you're going to make the map impossible for someone playing on Elite. It's going to be just as hard with a single ship as with multiple ships. The weakest link is a single escort playing on Elite difficulty, because the balance between offense and defense is skewed so far toward offense that the Escort cannot take the damage from more than about 2 groups maximum.

On the ground the number of enemies doesn't scale because you always have 5 people, just bridge officers substitute for real players. However, because BOs suck compared to real people (much lower damage, and poor use of their abilities), ground actually becomes easier as more real players are added.

Except now my story doesn't make a lot of sense. If I was the captain and my Science Officer said: "A fleet of ships on sensors." and I only see one ship, I'd tell them to check their sensors or replace them because they suck at their job.

Instead, I would expect a squadron of 5 ships to be just that - a squadron of 5 ships in approximately the same level as me.

Grrr - back to the drawing board because now none of my space encounters make any damn sense.
