Just a thought because your Boffs are covered. Maybe you should try Tetryons. The shield drain is small but I find it process more often and lasts longer than the phaser system shutdown.. Just a thought then torpedoes do alot more damage sooner. But I haven't been an escort since making va. So not all suggestions are viable from me.
finally took my tac captain out of the excelsior, and stuck her in a fleet escort. now that i cant keep my power over caped at all, the advantage of using a cruiser with her is gone. even though i love the look of the advanced escort and the MVAM option and station set up i just cant get a heal setup that i like with it. i also am using 5 beam arrays with a quantum fore and aft, so a PSW wouldn't do my any good like it would if i was using cannons, and the MVAM mobility isn't needed ether.
the whole beam array escort is something i have liked and flown for a long time, long before the FAW buff, but i actually haven't flown this setup since that happens. a beam array escort feels like the most canon setup in game imo, a ton of tactical options at your disposal without an extreme amount of over the top healing. so far im very happy with the results, and have been dealing massive damage and getting quite allot of kills. allot of people really hate FAW, but i know they must despise it when they get hit by about 30 beam array hits in a down shield facing with FAW III, FOMM, APB II, and APA, followed by a HY I critical. woops! that was a short battle! not very effective at all in arena matches, but great fun in cap and hold
Cannons, Cannons, Cannons! Load em up. They shred hull at close range after shields go bye bye. I don't use torps and I don't miss em. I love my Def-R and yes that extra Ensign tac boff station is wasted but its one less thing I have to manage. I keep my setup simple so I can concentrate on flying her.
Im just adding a reply here because I want to read this one tomorrow. I just switched to a Fleet Escort from an Advanced Cruiser Retrofit and I'm getting clobbered in PVP. Need some poinmters. I had little trobuble with the Cruizer but this escort is eating me up.
I know I am going to be called a damned fool for this. But I would recommend you try out a few games with Single Cannons. It is completely ignored by a lot of players, but for a fleet escort (IE someone in a fight for good) there is a lot to be said for HALF of your ship being in your firing arc. The biggest advantage actually comes from Z-axis as there is the hard cap on turning up and down. But I run 1 torp, then cannons front, and one torp and turrets rear. And being able to just hammer someone unrelentingly can make a difference especially in Capture maps. Also it means that being tractor beamed for a moment or two does not completely shut you down.
I have ran DHC and HC before, and the damage dropoff for swapping to Singles just wasn't that much. Especially once considered the near total firing time you gain.
Ive even tried a TurretCort.. All turrets is kinda fun (although semi weak)
And *all* players isnt ignoring Single Cannons.. I use it on my Tac Excelsior, and it is schweeeet!

You have to remember that you are in a far more fragile ship, you have to use its speed and manouvrebility a lot different..
Avoid other escorts frontal 45 degree arc, avoid cruisers broadsides and Science ships front.
