Pretty simple question. Can I make a Qin Raptor pvp viable with only cannons/turrets, a DBB, and maybe some tractor mines for annoyance sake?

The average skill level is pretty low, so most things can be "viable".

Against a real team with good players? No. An escort without torpedoes is not viable.

Sure. But a well timed torpedo to an exposed hull, especially with the effort it can take to drop a shield facing, is in incredibly satisfying sight. I can't imagine going without at least one torpedo.

Okay, thank everyone for their insight. Do any of your answers change if I tell you I'm overly dedicated to my Romulan theme and would insist on using Plasma Torpedoes?

Drop the trac mines, slap on another turret or aft trico, and use quantums. Aren't quantums a universal weapon by this time period? Dont set it on autofire and shoot torps manually. A well timed hy from a quant is devastating

That's impossible - You can't use a Raptor without Torpedoes but with Plasma Torpedoes!

everybody doesnt have to use torpedoes, but somebody on your team should. imho everyone should go for the torp/energy combo instead of going all energy, but to each his own. all cannons can be just as good a s 3 cannon 1 torp 2 cannon 1 beam 1 torp 3 torp 1 beam (me)

100% cannon escorts work fine.... however they require much more skill on the higher end of play.

As Begales pointed out against a good team you need more burst then normal to finish people off. In those cases a torp is nice.

The only way to make the all cannon ship work against better teams it to be a very good pilot. You will have to use things like aux to damp omega and evasive to keep arc as much as possible.

You will also have to be more creative... I bind my Dual Heavy cannons and my turrets to separate fire keys. This allows me to ALWAYS pull power for the DHC first, maxing there effectiveness... it also allows me to stop firing turrets all together if I have a perfect arc on a down shield facing.

Honestly for most people stick with a torp... it will give you the burst you need, bottom line they are more forgiving and give you a very nice pop on a heal boat.
