Get this. You can find it at most CE stores and even the base model card will run this game with decent graphics.

To say that there's a gap between an Nvidia 8600 and a top-end card is to badly misuse the term "gap." A more accurate phrase would be "yawning chasm."

You do not need a top-end card, or even something close to a top-end card. You just need something relatively recent. You can find cheap cards in the $30-$60 range. For example, at the moment Newegg has a GT 520 for $35 after rebate. Will it play STO at max settings? No, of course not. But will it play STO with halfway decent settings? Absolutely.

Like Cpt_Equinox says, you can buy a card that was high-performance a couple of years ago and it will run STO very nicely today. My son's laptop is 18 months old and has a GTX 260m. He can still run everything maxed out except shadows at 1920x1080.

(I'm an Nvidia bigot, as you can see. Never had good luck with ATI.)

I'll vouch for not needing a high-end card as well. My Alienware (Thanks for the 60 day Promo!) M17xR3 came configured with the GTX 460M, which is comparable to a GTS 450. I run the game at 1920x1080 with 2x MSAA and it plays smoothly.

I have a duo-core 8400, 4 gigs ram, and a nvidia 9800... the computer cost me about 800 bucks total, almost 2 years ago. You can get all the parts these days for under 500 bucks, though the vid card is kinda hard to find, and really you can get better for under 100 bucks. I can run at near max settings with no issues..

here is a card for just 125 bucks, and it comes with dungeon seige 3 !

do a little research and you can build a computer for under 500 bucks and probably even less. It will rock modern games.. as these days IMO no game pushes things any more. gone are the days that you need to build a new system for a new game.. Unless your system is 5+ years old.

Mine is 3-4 year old tech and i can run this, DDO, and even city of heroes ultra at basically max settings. all i do is turn down the AA slightly, and in all honestly the difference is hardly noticable. Spending 500+ on a vid card is by far the biggest waste of money you will ever spend.

Find something in the 100-150 range 99% of the time if you pick right you will be more than happy. If its not good enough for you, wait 6 months and get the next generation for that same price.
