I use turrents on my escort and i like them as a i get a good DPS with fore weapons fire and combination of the 360 degree movement of the turrets.
Works really well when used in conjunction with Beam Fire at Will and Cannon Scatter Volley

Fore
2x Dual Beam Banks
2x Dual Heavy Cannons

Aft
2x Turrets
1x Tricobalt Torpedo

Add a few useful tactical consoles to that and your laughing.

Under the Powers panel, click on your weapon. You'll see how many of the weapon type can fire at a given time. More than two turrets is almost pointless. Only two turrets will fire at a time. per game mechanics. You'd be better off mixing them in with something else.

As for an escort, the popular builds is DHCs on the bow with a torp, and 2 or 3 turrets in the rear. Personally I dislike running turrets on an escort. They don't look right. YMMV.

I have a hard time believing that. Turrets need less power than even beam arrays, and I can tear down shields way faster with a bunch of turrets and cannon rapid fire than I can with the same number of beams.

Edit: what game mechanics are you referring to? as far as I know, the game treats turrets as cannons, and you can run more than 2 canons at a time.

With Turrets get Canon Rapid fire and Direct Energy Modulation BO abilities and what shields melt... you can also throw in scatter volley if you like fora little AOE cone action...

Turrets = Cannons

That said do not mix beams and cannons unless you enjoy gimping your DPS.

If you are running all Cannons though then Turrets make your forward DPS very good as they add in their damage + your whole front row.

... Since when? I have 3 Turrets and 3 DHC's and they all fire together. I can watch them shoot off in the weapon box. Don't know what you are talking about. If your weapon's power is that low you should crank it up.

It's effective. I sacrifice some broadside damage as opposed to a beam boat, but I make up for it by having a very even 360 firing arc, lower power usage compared to the same number of beams, and a fast firing rate. Paired with EPtW, cannon rapid fire, and various damage buffs, it can be quite mean. It's also very useful against small, maneuverable craft like fighters. I find it's great for tanking, especially on PvE. I can fire off a cannon scatter volley to get the NPCs attention, and then i can worry about keeping myself alive instead of keeping my enemy in my firing arcs, giving my teammates a lot more time to do their thing. Haven't flown it much in PvP, but the few times I did it seemed effective.

Edit: also, the turrets may have a lower DPS, but the fact that they all can fire at the same time at the same target no matter where they are makes them quite potent. "Death by 1000 cuts" as it were.
I've always wanted to try a turret boat but was always unsure as to how to go about it. this seems like a great method, mind if i try it out? (i dont steal other players setups without asking or they make a thread about it giving it away freely) ofcourse, i might modify it to include a beam weapon for a larger firing arc instead of the duel beam bank. but it looks promising enough to try out and maybe even run a few test runs with variations on it.

Go right ahead. I'm leveling a sci character right now, and I'm considering doing another turret build, all turrets save for one beam array (or two, if i have problems keeping stuff in the firing arc, however I doubt that). Turrets for damage, beam for target subsystems and beam overload (in place of torpedo)

Edit: my advice, spec into cannons, get cannon rapid fire, use it in conjunction with tactical and weapon power buffs. Use that to take down shields, and have a beam overload or torp for the moment the shields come down.

Hit P, bring up your powers menu. Scroll through the abilities and so forth and find (energy type) Dual Heavy Cannon. Whichever you use; Phaser, Disruptor, etc. I use Phasers personally. You'll see Toggle (1) next to it, for a DHC. For a turret it's Toggle (2), for an Array and DBB it's Toggle (4). Oddly enough for torpedoes it's Toggle (10).

Now from my understanding, that's the number of weapons that can be toggled at any given time. So what I do personally is mix my weapons. Two turrets in the rear with a torpedo launcher. 1 DHC and 2 DCs on the bow with another torp launcher.

It's entirely possible that I've misunderstood that function in the powers menu. If so I'd really appreciate some sort of clarification from the devs if possible.

The torpedoes(10) indicates to me it's not about how many can fire at once (obviously no ship has 10 weapons slots)

However, I've been looking as hard as I can, and it seems no one seems to know what that stat is even for. All I can find is more debates like this one. Hopefully a dev will answer this...
