I have the Aegis set on several of my tier 5 ships. How come the shield numbers differ from ship to ship? On one ship the shield is 9000 HP strong, but on another, only 6300 HP strong. The regen rate is also different.

Based on the ship you're flying, it has diffrent base energy values. This directly affects your ships output to diffrent systems.

For example: Escorts take great benefit in engines, but has very little bonus to shields, based on the "Small and fast" concept.

I can't break it into math for you, but that's basically how it works.

Thanks, that's good to know. My little Intrepid class gets 9000+ shielding out of it, but my big star cruiser only gets around 6300.

Yea... Cruisers focus more on survivability through hull strength and heals, where Sci ships focus on defubb/buffs and shield heals.

Escorts are pure DPS.

Edit: If you know other MMO's or RP games, think of it like this:

Cruisers/Eng: Serve as tanks

Sci: Serves as wizards

Escort/Tac: Assasins/Offensive.

You can look at stowiki.org for different information on shields and other items. This is actually a really good website. The break done for the Federation is Escorts are at 90%, Cruisers at 100% and Science ships are at 130%. So any ship you fly you can take the base number and multiply by this percentage and get to the number that is showing up. The 35% increase engineering console will also increase that number.

I had no idea shield and engine stats varied by which ship you stuck the item on. An interesting game mechanic.

I've relied on STO a lot - it's a good site. I had no idea about the shields though!
