The only ones you really need to worry about are Scis; Escorts will be packing damage buffs regardless, and Cruisers will be packing high level heals, with DEM 3/Extend 3/A2SIF 3/EWP 3. 3 out of the 4 you don't really need to be aware of (nothing you can do about DEM and A2SIF, Extend is obvious and can be worked around) and the 4 isn't too terribly hard to avoid (EWP).

Scis, though, are a whole 'nother story. But, within the first minute of the match, you usually know what you're up against.

See, I feel like being able to see the BO layout would be a bit too much. Whereas seeing the equipment would be more like a bunch of guys standing around a new car looking at their buddies engine.

heck, I'll tell everything... except the one or two things I see as my own specialty! And I think this is true for most captains. Unfortunately, these little things are usually the difference between awsome and useless... :p

Yeah, I like this idea.

In my opinion it should work in a similar manner to SFC. As you get closer to the target, the target info box will fill out with specific data.

25km - The target info box displays hull value (rather then hovering your mouse over it)

20km - The target info box displays the targets weapon hardpoints (but not the weapons themselves) which pretty much everyone will know anyway. It'll also display the speed.

15km - The target info box allows you to get specific shield health values by hovering your mouse over a shield face.

10km - The target info box displays specific weapons in the form of icons.

5km - Details on shield array, engine and deflector are displayed. No specific details such as the "mark" or it's mods, just details like graviton, covariant, combat, Borg etc.

BO layout would be too much. Also, from a more in-universe perspective, how is a scan supposed to tell you who is working at a station.

Cloaked and MES'd ships should not be able to get information beyond what a non-cloaked ship at 20km could get.

How about this for a scan display:

When you target a ship, you get the choice of scan, if you scan it a 3d holo image of the ship pops up, freely positionable on the screen, that shows you the shape and slotted equipment. power levels as a general guideline, higher then yours, lower, same level kind of deal. Just a rough idea what they are no precise numbers. the longer the scan is running the more details you are getting. for example after 5 seconds, a lifesign status, 64% human, 12% andorian, 1% borg etc. more details about the equipment, like it starts with phaser beams, after a few seconds, it reads mark 10 phaser beams, etc.

I'd advice against anything 3D, as the STO engine has HUGE problems even drawing the 2D UI. Notice how when you disable the UI (Alt+F12) your framerate doubles!
