Just curious to see everyone's strategies here... how many computer-controlled ships of your same rank class can you take on at the same time and successfully defeat?
For me, I can take on 2 computer-controlled ships of my same rank class and not have a problem. I could probably take on a 3rd if I use my BOFF abilities to recover my hull and shields. However, any more than that, and I'd probably get crushed in no time flat. Like the other day in this Deep Space Encounter facing the Terran Empire, the flagship appeared afterwards surrounded by 3 Prometheus-class vessels and a Luna class. Their torpedoes seemed to pass through my shields like they weren't even there, so I had to retreat since the only ally I had in the Deep Space Encounter warped out before the flagship arrived.
Depends one what you're facing; anybody in the game could probably take on an ever increasing number of frigates with minimal issue.
Like I said before though, the rest really depends on the opponent; fighting generic enemies is not the same as fighting multiple Borg Cubes, and so on so it's hard to say.
It depends on the enemy. The Borg shield neutralizer can make things very hard on you, you can't deal with it well if there are dozens of them being spammed on you. Hull-Tanking is not that effective.
I think the next factor can be Subnucleonic Beam. Too many Jem'Hardar or Breen ships will probably cause too many SNBs removing your resistance buffs.
If we just have some regular KDF or FED NPCs, I wouldn't be surprised if one could handle a dozen or so of Cruisers and Battleships. (Frigates as well, but normally I count 1 Cruiser = 3 Frigates- I supect that 36 frigates firing at once at you might be too much damage at a time to handle. Frigates tend to deal more damage up-front, but as you can pick them one-by-one, their damage drops rapidly over time.)
I have recently made a test like this at Tier 2 (or rather Tier 2.5, the Pay-To-Win Nova variant). With 2 Transfer Shield Strength and 2 Hazard Emitters, I could probably engage 6 Frigates, 1 Battleship and an Escort idenfinitely. That will scale up at higher levels. (IN this scenario, I didn't figh tback intiitially to even draw that many enemies to fight me, and the 2nd Hazard Emitters seemed crucial to avoid being getting depleted. So the upper limit might actually not be quite reached in that example scenario, as I was only trying to tank, not to kill as well.)
