just wondering, do certain sets work better for certain ships?

for example, is the Aegis set better for cruisers or the Borg set better for escorts?

I think it has more to do with your particular play style. I shove the aegis set on everything I fly. Admittedly most of that is escorts my brain will climb out of my ear if I stick with anything else for to long and I canít be bothered to carry around and swap out parts. Iíve heard people say the borg shields can be nice with tac team and for some the tractor could work out well also. The borg engines are nice on the big map. each has some advantage over the other.

I like the aegisís shield Resistance buff and a few of the other things its got plus its rather easy to get so I'd say start with that. The blue fire coming out of your ships back side when you have the star wars guys engines looks cool also though.

I agree with flyingshoebox, I think it depends on playstyle; however if (for example) one set gives a higher boost to shields you may want to use that one escorts. If it boost speed more than other sets you might want to use that on cruisers. Its just like everything else, you want to learn the weaknesses of your ship and try to compensate.

Borg set is pretty good on cruisers, especially those with a Borg captain and a BO with "efficient" trait.
Stacks up and gives "a lot" of extra power to engines, aux and a fair bit to shields.

Yes , but do you really want to grind STF's for it? Personaly, I find the Borg set to be " Surplus To Requirement".

There isn't any grind when you just do the STF once for each part of the set. If you were repeating the STF, hoping to get more purple drops, that would be grinding.

If you get the STF done right the first time, which is no guarantee. Many people, myself included, might bash their face against STFs repeatedly hoping to finish them when you find them difficult, and that kind of counts as grinding as it becomes a war of attrition between the STF and your will to complete it.

Well, no, it doesn't "count" as grinding. Either you're grinding (repetitively completing tasks for a reward) or you're not. If you're not completing the STF because you are unable to, you're not doing it repetitively to receive the rewards. You're just banging your head against a brick wall, in which case you either need to find other players that are better than the ones you currently attempt the STF with, or become a better player yourself, depending on which happens to be the problem.

With the exception of KA, which I havn't done yet, none of the STFs I've attempted have been hard. The only time there was ever trouble was the last boss of Infected, with five tactical officers. And that was the first time some of us had done it, myself included.

Like any game, if you're repeatedly failing - you're obviously doing something wrong (or theres a bug). Tactics, gear or team setup can all play a part, and they're often additive effects radically altering the difficulty of your task.

There are several guides out there to STFs, as well as many people/fleets offering assistance to other players in getting through them. They're really not difficult once you get a basic grasp of each one's nuances, get halfway decent and appropriate gear, and learn a bit of teamwork. Even if that doesn't suit you, they'll be rolling out more PUG-friendly versions that will be a bit easier sometime within the next couple months.

As for the original question, I concur that set choice depends on playstyle. I find Borg to be good on most cruisers, but I like Aegis on the Excelsior. I love Aegis on my escorts, simply for the defense increase (if you're building an STF escort, reactive shielding also goes well with that eng console that gives damage resist vs. plasma... electroceramic?).

KDF-side, I have an Eng/Gumby that does surprisingly very well in the Breen set.

I find the set to be surplus to My requirement. Therefore I have no motivation to beet my head on the STF anvil .
