Do you sometimes miss the days when there were no item sets in PvP?

Where you had to choose between 4 base types of deflectors and their special modifiers?
Where you had to choose between 3 base types of impulse engines and their special modifiers?
Where you had to choose between 4 base types of shields and their special modifiers?

Because sometimes I do. I think the Aegis and Borg set have considerably constrained or choices at endgame. You basically need one of the sets, because they give valuable bonuses.
On the positive side, they might be responsible for a kind of "balance" between ship types, as ships like Escorts or BoPs have now ways to boost their survivaiblity with Borg mods or the Aegis defense mods.

But I also feel that I can't do well without the sets. I'd be missing out these powers. So I can't pick a particular Deflector, as, i's not part of an item set.

I know some people still use the Mark X [CAP]x3 Covariants. Maybe they are really still competitiveand are worth losing some buffs. But I am not convinced.

Sometimes I wish that all those special items - sets, tractor beam mines, hargh'Pengs and the like would simply not available in PvP. There would be more choices, and a lot of sources for unbalanced items would also be removed.

How do you feel? All nonsense? At least the sets are item worth pondering about, unlike the regular gear? The special items give us more variety and ensure that the game doesn't get stale? some stuff was good, some stuff bad?

The implementation was poor and the detail of their abilities visually and in the logs excluded. These sets have been directly responsible for perception that a player is not on the up and up. I have been called a cheater in CnH with 1.3 million damage and 1.03 million in healing in a raptor all because the borg set procs and provides a TSS and HE effect. Or because the Borg set makes escorts very tanky. I understand the sets were to be max level replacement for some of the special items you got leveling up, IE MKIV Efficient engines the full borg set gives you the bonuses the EIE gave and then some extra icing.

Green is the color of pure evil in STO:

- Borg are green.
- Borg Procs are green.
- RPS was green.
- Scramble Sensors is green.
- Romulans are Green.

Anything to add?

Can someone please craft a clever wordplay with "The Green Mile" here perhaps?

I remember those days, and honestly at this point I don't miss them.

Sure my Transfer Shield strength was a little more potent (and my feedback pulse was as well when I chose to run with it) but I really don't miss the days of being just ground under, despite having heals thrown my way.

While it has constrained ship builds so very slightly, it has reopened team compositions. It's no longer utterly mandatory to run around with two full on heal cruisers.

I do wish the Aegis set were a little better, I feel it's almost comparable to Purple X Gear all the way around. Then again that is not necessarily a bad thing as it is easy to acquire.

I'm with you Mustrum, I run the Aegis set on my BoP and the Borg on my cruiser but would rather neither existed as I do believe they have reduced the choice in setting up your ship - it seems you just have to have one or other of the sets to PvP and that must be reducing the potential for diverse ship setups.

Keep in mind that three more sets are on the way - well six sets, but three are ground - the need to choose between sets may come back soon™

And.. I still choose to run with "normal" gear on my Tac TBR boat (Reman shield, Hyper x2 spd, Rare MK XII Deflector with some hefty Emitter and Tractor bonus.

My Kar'fi runs with a Reman shield as well (simply because it looks awesome)

So.. Now people chose between Borg shield, Aegis Shield, Breen Shield ,Cov x3 shield or Reman Shield

Before, 99% of all players used either a Cov x3 or a Cov x2

Before, nearly everyone was using Hyperimpulse with Turn or Spd mods

Deflectors are still a important choice for anyone using Sci powers, as the 3 set Deflectors isnt specialized.

Since my love of regen shields has kicked in full force, until I get the Borg shields I usually run a mkXI purple regen with cool resist bonus' to phaser, antiproton and disruptor. Matter of fact sometime I think they perform better than the Borg shields. I don't need the tractor and the extra regen is sweet, but I guess it's all situational.

Oh and sometimes I still throw on those efficient mkIV engines... The one with the power levels bonus. Yeah. Sets are overrated. Sometimes.

My main beef with the sets is that there is no way to get equivalent gear from PvP.
