Watched one of the new episodes of Stoked just now and I have to say I am a little bummed about the new quad cannons. The animation looks great but I really dislike the the fact that on the tool tip it appears that each cannon has a -10 engine power modifier on them. I know there are some canon reasons to explain this but we all know that canon has often taken a back seat to game play.
With all they CC in this game do we really need another mechanic that is going to slow our escorts down to a crawl when firing? I know we have yet to test these ships and I eagerly await to do so, but I am getting the feeling that the one thing I was looking forward to in this game is going to be a big let down.
Thoughts?
Edit: I noticed that the power engine lvls do not drop when firing so it looks like the -10 modifier is always in effect when equipping the cannons.

It may be like Weapon Power drain, it only kicks in when fire more than one energy weapon at the same time. We get one free energy weapon which doesn't drain any Weapon Power.

I thought that as well but on the tool tip there was clearly a difference in the verbiage that described the weapon power drain versus engine power drain. The -10 weapon power drain takes effect when firing but there was no such verbiage on the -10 engine power modifier.

Ahh if only Cryotic released proper notes when they make massive changes, explaining how it affects the game mechanics. No. Instead we have to flail around in the dark like lungfish on a hotplate in a cave. I would take the analogy further.. but I wont.
Well they did say on DS9 that the Defiant's cannons can be made faster and more powerful by rerouting power from the impulse engines.
So thats probally why.

Good point!
Now if I reroute all power from the replicators (voyager sytle) apparantly I can fight off foes (including the borg) for 5 years + (with no loss in the ability to replicate unlimited ammount of shuttles and/or coffee)
the reason voyager managed to have unlimited resources is because every other week Harry kim would Be cloned / Alternate reality / aliens / borg etc etc and so they just shove another harry kim corpse into the replicator buffer

I would be fine with the loss in engine power if the mods on the quad cannons were actually decent. Who knows, maybe by the time they are released they will be tweaked to actually have good modifiers on them based on community feedback. Oh wait never mind whom am I kidding.
