The Dilithium System, which allows you to trade your in-game resource, for C-Points, provides this in-game method you are referring to.
Yes, I am well aware that the Dilithium-to-CP conversion is a way to earn the ships in-game. That is why I asked OTHER than that? If it is an "exploit", as Stephen pointed out, then I call BS on it. First off, the in-game unlocks that we have now (VA token and 500 emblem grind) only unlocks ONE ship on ONE character. It's fine the way that is now on Holodeck. As others have suggested, tieing the ship token to a Veteran reward is the best way to go in this regard. I humbly suggest that you look into doing this.
With that said, players can still do well in the "stock" T5 ships against the C-Store "premium" ships. Hell, even though I bought the Excelsior I just can't bring myself to part with my Star Cruiser. It's just as viable at end-game as any other T5, T5.5 (or T5 +1 or whatever the hell you want to call it) ship.
Additionally everyone is arguing about ships.... this system is Sooooooo much better than before. You are trading C-Points for Dilithium, you can get anything now via in game time: Ship Slots, Inventory Space, Costumes, Respec Tokens, Ship interiors, and what ever else new that they can come up with. This was not possible before.
This system is going to be way better than what we had before and if you can't see it I don't know what to tell any of you.
The only thing up in the air is the exchange rate and in game DL prices for items which has been adjusted in this new build (i'm at work so wont be able to see how well they were adjusted for a few hours)
Edit: I'd rather keep my fleet escort over the Defiant-R loosing a console for a special ability like a cloak or saucer separation is stupid and I like the bridge officer layout is better on the fleet escort.

The Excelsior is not a +1 Ship. It has the same power level as other ships of its tier. Its not like the RI with an extra Lt slot.
Why would I trade C-points for Dilithium? That is the answer we really want Cryptic!!
The new economy doesn't make sense... perhaps someone could enlighten us as to why dilithium would be worth trading REAL money for...?
Perhaps you, or someone else, would like to purchase an item from one of the Dilithium Stores in-game? Maybe you want to purchase that super awesome Dual Heavy Phaser Cannon of Borg Slaying +2billion. Maybe you look at said item and say, "I can earn enough dilithium in-game, for free, in "X" time to get this. Or, I can trade "x" Cryptic Points which I already have for the dilithium I need to buy that right now."
Maybe, you would prefer the instant gratification. Maybe you would rather not spend the money.
The idea behind this system, is that to some people, time is more valuable than money. Therefor, they are willing to give someone who has more time, money, so they can get something that they want, rather than spending the time to get that item.
So, if you can spare more money for that super awesome Dual Heavy Phaser Cannon of Borg Slaying +2billion, than you can or want to spare time earning it, you have the option to trade your C-Points to another player for some of their "Dilithium", or, in another word, some of their "time".

I could argue that the transwarp ability gave it an edge-up on the competition. With the exception of Ambassadors, it was the only way to TW to starbases other than ESD and save valuable travel time.

A question I've had that I haven' t been able to find an answer for is the trade-rate for Dilithium to C-Points fixed? IE I will *always* have to pay say 50 Dilithium to get 1 C-point? (this is just a number grabbed from my head). I would actually prefer this over a free-form trade system.

I think that are going to make that a console now... idk...

No, it is not fixed. That means at certain times you might bet a better deal if your trading for DL, while at other times you might get a better deal if your trading for CP. This is how most MMO economies work, so its really like the VA ships and XI gear are items being sold on the market and their values go up and down.
