I started the ship with dual heavies up front. Was fine in PvE.

But, I PvP religiously, and have learned to prefer dual beams.

By "Cannons" I meant the ability to use Dual and Heavies, Singles are fine because of their better firing arc (though I personally don't use them) D/H Cannons on the other hand just don't work well with the Galaxy hull because it turns like a beached whale with weights attached to it that's also being held in a tractor beam, so trying to haul the thing around to fire a burst off is painful but the main factor is that the Gal X's lack of Tac BOFF slots makes taking full advantage of D/H'ies difficult without sacrificing beam and torpedo abilities.

If you cannot do these things on a regular basis, I will go so far as to say you're not using the ship properly. My cloak and lance are not simply "toys".

In my hands, they are enough to win matches.

As they should in yours.
From reading this I would suppose that you are a tac. flying the Dread. I'm an eng. Different build and different tactics for a different skill set. You've got a burst DPS killer and I've got a tank set up to draw aggro and provide general support. Mine is built to take a beating... I run two copies of EPtS 3 along with all the other engineer goodies. Some people say it is a waste, but as it generally takes the concentrated efforts of 3 or more players to take me down I'd like to think it is pretty successful.

I also don't really play PvP in the queues. It's turned into too much of a pain... spam and scramble all over and premades rolling the pugs.

I spend much of my time in Ker'rat now, where the PvP tends to be smaller shorter engagements usually resulting from a couple of feds being jumped by a couple of Klinks. I'm having a lot more fun there than I ever did in arena or C&H.

Look me up in game sometime, we can compare notes.

As for "free spike damage" yes the Phaser Lance gives the Gal X a powerful alpha strike but its tantamount to useless in most situations simply because it'll be on cooldown when it would actually be useful, which is why I suggest making it an item is so it doesn't feel so much like dead weight.
I agree with the turn rate being a non-issue as this is the way it is for me as well.

All I do is tune the impulse engine down a notch for tighter turns when submerged in an enemy battle group and ping away as her hull and shields tank.

Regarding the phaser lance, I use it along side a Beam Overload I BO power. By this, I mean that I use the BO I until the lance has recharged and then make tactical decisions on when I want to unleash it.

I would, however, like to see it on a slightly lower cool down from that higher 3 minutes.

But overall, about my favorite Federation ship (with the Venture X-skin) in game with the Vor'cha refit (with the Vor'Kang skin) being my absolute favorite.

Hat is off again to CapnLogan for such wonderful ship skins.

That's because you don't feel right in anything but a KDF uniform and ship.

Do you like using multiple dual beams on this girl up front? ... I've given it some thought both run currently with 1 torp, 2 beam arrays and 1 dual bank up there.

Helps with the broadside damage.

Any ship in the game, Galaxy-X included, becomes a completely different machine when swapping hands between Tactical, Engineer, or Science.

Yes, I am a Tactical Galaxy-X Captain. I hit much harder, but you do have the advantage of survivability.

I do PvP in Ker'rat as well. I simply don't enjoy it as much because in most normal situations, one of two things will happen.

1.) Just to be an ***, one of my own "allies" will train about 20 Borg ships on the spawn point and screw both sides out of some decent PvP.

2.) My spineless "allies" are too concerned with completing the PvE objective that they just run away from any enemy players, often leaving me 1vs4+.

I enjoy PvP. I do not enjoy PvE trains amidst otherwise fun PvP. I do not enjoy a PvP match among completely distracted or otherwise cowardly allies against a determined enemy.

Take out the Borg or any other useless PvE mobs in Ker'rat, FORCE the two opposing sides to face each other in PvP, and I would likely enjoy it a lot more, even with PuGs.

Otherwise, I prefer to stick with my fleet and enjoy pure PvP with people I can count on and who count on me, against enemies who aren't distracted on worthless PvE agendas and can apply 100% of their attention to destroying me.

THAT is a challenge, and THAT is my preference on fun.

But, to each their own.

As a Tac Gal-X, I don't care about broadside DPS. Pathetic and worthless to me.

I can do far more carnage with 3x dual beams up front.

Reason being is after using this ship for so long, I know how to get my nose on my target. I have allies who assist me as well. I don't have to worry about turn rates or spreading my arcs around.

I'm able to concentrate on my ability to destroy my enemies as effectively as possible.

This plays into my favor as well and tempts stupid morons into wanting to hang around on my rear, thinking it's vulnerable.

It's not. Eject Warp Plasma 3 and they wish they never bothered. They become sitting ducks, and I can do whatever I want to them.

This will allow me to easily get my devastating forward arc on just about any enemy I want, whenever I want.

Playstyle preference I suppose. If you have crap allies who can't work together, or if you'd rather not find ways of bringing your nose on your target, single beams might be better for you.

Non factor for me.

My own front loadout is 2x DBB, 1x Torp and 1x DHC. I had an array up front but found it wasn't doing a whole lot of good on the broadsides... the cannons give me greater damage up front... and the whole objective of this ship is to get the front end around on a target.

I can respect that, but the discussion was about the Gal-X (a cruiser chasis) and some treating it like an escort.
