I agree with you - we paid for the game and if you subscribe you should have the same game you always had when it comes to how things are acquired. Sure there was too many currencies in game and currencies we out leveled and couldn't use. We asked for them to be consolidated, not for them to be used as a method to drive C-Store sales.

You idea is a great one for subscribers and I'd be wholly satisfied if they did this. But I'm under no illusion that it will happen in any way shape or form. They want existing subscribers to Play More and Pay More along with Silver players. Especially people like me who bought the LTS when it first went on sale. We're really the only ones truly playing for free right now.

So I don't agree with how going F2P is impacting existing subscribers. But I definitely understand why they are doing it. Look at the Atari memo's from Cryptic's Divestment. They lost more money than they earned most of the time. Dey wants moe money honey - from EVERYONE. Plain n simple.
NGE seems to mean something different to almost ev1 that played at the time. Some, NGE was the take-away development such as loss of the 32 professions, pets, etc. Some NGE meant the loss of their unlocked alpha prof (jedi) and CHANGING it to the "one-clicky" jedi. Some NGE was the CHANGE to crafting, need (or lack of it) for the non-combat profs, the CHANGES to doctor to medic, or just the shear amount of the CHANGES themselves all totaled together. Some just didn't like the way it was done. The SOE addage of "we developed it, we're going to put it in no matter what any1 says". It seems that SOE's NGE had something for most everyone to hate about it. It was all inclusive, it got ev1.

This seems to be about the same. It includes "take-away" development such as VA tokens, etc. It includes profession revamps to the point of my ship (excel) seems to be getting a console for MORE POWER (the TIm Taylor-ing of the excel) which I can tell you with almost certainty will be NERFed at a later date. My tac in an excel now, takes at least 4 people to take me out in most PVP matches, I can log DPS end match numbers in the top 2 with only the best of escorts beating me out in shear damage numbers, and healing numbers in the top 3 at least. The only thing now that holds me back in that excel is power and that has been CHANGED on tribble even with the Com level excel. (I've got it on tribble) And when they start NERFing bought and paid for items with specific stats as the reason why some1 bought it in the 1st place, I can see ALL kinds of problems with that up to and including the Courts. (just like SOE again with the refunds for TooW) The crafting "take-away" CHANGES are now at 1/2 the total extent of crafting along with not being able, anylonger, to even buy EC white gear in the even catagorys either. (I would expect to see these gear items included in the C-Store any day now) etc etc etc, right on down the line. The economy CHANGES with all the listed problems there. Seems this line of CHANGES has something for ev1 to hate also. So, I kinda believe it qualifiys as an NGE just as much as the original, maybe not exactly the same as SOE's but maybe the Cryptic version of the NGE. (they have to at least put their own signature on it) We already have the "I quit" threads, the in-game "goodbye" mails while this in on tribble, kinda exactly the same as when NGE was on TC. The only difference that I expect when this version goes live, is you will be able to do more than just stand there using chat (due to all the bugs).

This could not have happened at a worse time for STO. TOR will be out about the same time as these CHANGES go live, I would expect. That creates another option rather than to just stay here and put up with a CHANGED game. (kinda like ev1 did with SOE's NGE, they went to WoW back then) I seriously doubt that these CHANGES to bring on a playerbase they don't have at the expense of the playerbase they do have will work any better for Cryptic than it did for SOE. Cryptic needs to think about what happens if they give the F2P "party" and no1 comes which did happen to SWG's NGE.

This is a totaly different deal than taking CO F2P. CO had basicly little to NO playerbase when they did that. Cryptic really couldn't have been let down any farther, with that game, as they were already standing on the ground and down about as far as they could go. However, STO does have a playerbase to it. At least from what I've seen, it was said that STO had over 100K players with some Cryptic employees haveing now stated that went up since then. There is something to lose here. The same thing that SOE risked at the original NGE. (in their case about 200K subs)

Will this be known next year as Cryptic's NGE? We'll just have to wait and see, I guess. It is a gamble that I hope they have thought about and they are willing and able to lose. Bringing the comparison up again, SOE wasn't ready for it and SWG, SOE, and even the specific developers suffered greatly from. I believe that Dan Rubinfield (NGE developer) used the specific verbage of........, "Epic fail".

Having people actually lose some equipment, or an entire ship would not only ramp up the seriousness of the game, but provide a sink for the economy to mean something.

I do not see how you can run an economy off of the "click this button and your ship magically reappears" paradigm.

Now one can mitigate the loss of a ship, either by going on a mission to retrieve gear from the wreck, or hull components, or even dilithium. But this additional missions would add to the game and also make people think twice about tactics that are based around respawning for free.

An insurance model (again a sink) or a prestige model (the Admiralty of Starfleet likes you a great deal so they give you another hull but not the equipment) can be implemented.

Another method would be to have the captains put up X amount of dilithium linked to a list of the gear they will need for a 10 kill PvP arena match. If they do not die, they get their dilithium back automatically, if they die the full 10 times they lose it all. This would allow PvP arena matches to be played like the current games but still penalize weak captains for poor performances.

Wean the community off of the Respawn button and most of your economic problems will go away. You can then have characters crafting items based on their skill levels and actually sell these items on the exchange, and the exchange will finally means something.

If that happened, people will leave this game more than they are now.

Really thou. I'm with you on this. Any body that wants to repay for they. Ship clearly has too much to spend. Like honestly. What next? If we die we are dead for good and have to restart from the begaining. I'm sorry but if we do what this guy wants this game will be no different from final fantasy online which is pretty much dead. Did you want the link to confirm that?

Seeing the new economy in full action now I have to say it is messed up.

Merits were nice to have, especially for ship names and the like. That made sense, but Dilithium for a ship rename? That is ridiculous.

If it's not too late I have a suggestion: add a second "special" currency - deuterium. That's another Trek staple.

Just one problem with the removal of ship tokens. If we discover that it's too much for what we can afford at the time, we have to do those dailies and exploration missions a rank higher than our ship is made for. BRING BACK SHIP TOKENS.

Umm...

They did. Two for silvers, 4 for golds.

The exceptions are RADM (no new ships, what was the point) and VADM (those ships were always optional, as the RA ships are of equeal strength).

I highly recommend that Cryptic postpone the F2P deadline for several months, due to the apparent ingame economic problems. No offense, but I highly doubt that the economy will be perfected or tweaked on time, that is before the December 9th deadline.

The STO ingame economy is what will make or break the game, despite the awesome interface and que systems. There is another reason for the delay as well, the Duty Officer interface is clunky at best and vague to many players. Though its an awesome idea, but the interface and menus need alot of cleaning up, in other words make it more user friendly.

Short Term Roadmap

There is a lot of speculation in the community about the roadmap for Star Trek Online in the near future. We have shared a few dates already, but now it is time to put it into context.
November
On Holodeck throughout the rest of November, we are running a Featured Episode Replay event. This is a chance for players to go play these episodes to get some exclusive rewards. On Tribble, we will continue polishing up the new build of the game.
December
In early December (probably between December 1st and 8th), we plan to bring the new game build from Tribble to Holodeck. We’re really looking forward to getting the new content, new systems, and the many game play improvements to the mainstream players. This is a significant release, bringing in new content like the Borg Invasion of Defera, new systems like the Duty Officer system, a variety of new events and dailies, and a plethora of improvements across the game.

Also in December, we’re planning for STO’s first real holiday event. You can expect snow, presents, and other winter season fun! We’ll reveal a lot more about this event in early December, but we’re excited to see a festive spirit into STO. The event is scheduled to run from mid-December through into the new year.
January
We plan to roll out a mini-update in early January with additional game improvements, and then there will be the build-up to the January 17 free-to-play launch date.
February
February starts with the two year anniversary event for STO on February 2. We expect to have fun and prizes at the celebration.

Then shortly thereafter, we’re going to roll out the next Featured Episode series that focuses on the Dominion. This promises to be the best series yet!

As with all peeks into the future, all of the above is subject to change. There are also some other events coming that are not included so we have a few pleasant surprises to announce when they get closer.

Executive Producer
Star Trek Online
You were saying about no deadline - the above is Blog #23. It is possible things may change, but as it stands now, this is what they are definitely aiming for.
