You can now collect NPC doffs (duty officers) - not to be confused with youboffs (bridge officers). Doffs are your "nameless" minions that fix hull damage, load torpedoes or whatever else keeps the ship running.

Now you can "collect" them and assign them to do side missions while you're off on your main mission. You can assign them to do maintenance on the weapons arrays, check the sensor logs for anomalies, entertain a diplomat while he waits, guard prisoners... etc. The assignment then runs on a timer at the end of which you discover their level of success or failure. If they successfully complete their task you earn skill points, dilithium, credits, and/or other stuff - depending on the mission they're given.

Not all doffs are created equal, some have traits that adjust the chance of success or reward on certain types of missions. Hence the "collect" statement above.

As you can prolly tell I'm a fan of the new system. Heck, right now it's my favorite part of the game.
I JUST NOW read the "Duty Officers 101" thread! This new system sounds excellent! I cannot wait to get my hands on the system and try it out. The concept sounds like it'll really have a "Trek" feel to it.

63% of the patching is done. >< Darn you internets, work faster!

If by 'Trek feel' you are picturing your ship's yeoman coming to you with one of those electronic clipboards to sign as you play the DOff system.

Look, the DOff system is really good, and I like a lot of things about it. I think there's a lot of potential in it for other things -- like Duty Ships just for starters. And it will of course form the basis for the Department Head and First Officer systems. These are big, these are things no other game -- certainly no other space MMO -- has done.

But when you get down to it, it's a minigame. It's cool and all, and Heretic's communication throughout the development process was amazing. But it just did not grab me. Maybe when I play it some more, I'll get into it.

That's fair enough. And everyone has particular tastes, so what seems to be great to me might not be so to the next guy. Like you said, though; It does have a lot of potential for some really unique and interesting stuff!

Absolutely. The last thing I want to do is knock a system that someone's having fun with, especially one that has so much potential! And ESPECIALLY one that should be a hallmark for communication between devs and users.

Like I said, I probably just need to play it more. =)

There is also the Fed and KDF mirror events as well as the Borg Red Alerts (random in any space sector) and Ground Invasion (Defari home world, not sure of how often these pop per day/week).

There is a new space skill tree that people either love or hate depending on who you talk to and the ground skills will be completed soon.

Over the last year there has been a large content drought (seriously there was little or no content added at all for the better part of year). This has changed and steady downpour has come about as a result.

Oh and claim your free ships in the C-Store (one fed and one Klingon) while they stay free. It is a gift from Cryptic for a few more days at least.

Kidding - I think a lot of the roleplayers use Drozana in Eta Erandi as an RP hub.

Welcome back.
Very belatedly- Thanks for the intel! I'll have to fly on over there and see if I can grab a bit of RP. Also thanks for the welcome back.

I am already glad I resubbed. Despite it's numerous cons, STO continues to provide me with a solid amount of entertainment and fun.

I think, oddly, no one's mentioned the ground combat update, which you might have missed. Ground combat is vastly different now. With a focus on being much faster. After the update went through it wasn't unheard of for a group to clear one of the STFs in 30 minutes.

The other think is the skill revamp is in a teething process. Right now the space skills are completely different, with a focus on passive boosts and a deliberate avoidance of overspecialization. Want to jump from a cruiser beam boat to a heavy cannon escort, you can do that and there's no respecing involved at all.

I haven't gotten to test the new ground combat extensively yet, but the people I spoke to said it was better somehow?

I DID notice the new space skills. Jury's still out on if I like it yet or not.
