W, A, S and D function as before, ship will do a half strafe in relation to camera orientation, much like if you were holding both mouse buttons and tried to use the W, A, S or D keys. Q and E would still control the speed. Change key binds as needed.

The second way was, Press key, reticle comes up, left mouse button fires your phasers(unless changed), right mouse button fires torpedoes(unless changed). Ship does not follow camera and must be orientated manually via the W, A, S and D keys. All other keys the same, unless changed by the player(could be handy for cruiser pilots so they can keep a broadside even if their camera is facing the target)

Personally though, I would like both versions added, or the ability to set up both versions, give space shooter players the choice on if they want cruiser style or escort style.
SO basically it makes all ships auto turret in combat so you can sit and shoot with ease, including a strafing ability and auto camera orientation?

No thanks.

I can see the OP's idea being pretty good for escorts. I don't have anything similar set up myself, but I could see it working.

Rightly or wrongly, this is much like having a fully free Z axis when flying. It's contrary to the "Horatio Hornblower" idea that we're really more like sailing ships on an ocean. And Horatio only moves forward, left, and right, and always looks forward...

I personally don't care. As long as it was like ground and I could disable free targeting I'd be content.

So on the ground, your character is an auto turret and you can shoot with ease?

For all intensive purposes that is the effect I get in Target mode, very first person shooter. Which works on the ground but I do not see it working in space .
I believe the turret effect will be compounded.

so, no thanks.

Well, I respect that you don't like it. But I believe this is a case where I have to quote myself:

*shrugs* I honestly think it would spice up space combat for people like me who actually enjoyed the shooter mode ground combat.

What's the worst that will happen? They implement it, and very few people use it. Not like it's game breaking.

Well one response is that they have wasted enough resources making things nobody uses. Examples include ship interiors, fleet actions that are not fun/bugged, missions like terradome which nobody plays because they're hard to start since they're not on the fleet action queue, captain's table (although this seems to have gotten an marked increase in usage by vets looking to get away from the F2P noob chatter) etc.

Another point I bring up is that FPS in ground mode is nice because it differentiates the "feel" of space and ground combat. I like the two modes now because they are fundamentally different. Whereas having shooter mode for everything the only difference would be the scenery. And for many people, the new control scheme is more intuitive and more effective. I think that with firing arc limitations and ship orientation, "shooter mode" in space is less intuitive and less effective.

However, if they expanded space combat to allow for specific ship component targeting (like they do in the shows all the time- target their weapons, engines, shield generator, etc), then a manually-aimed shooter mode might be a worthwhile addition for space combat. It's kind of sad that a game released almost 20 years ago (TIE Fighter in 1994) had a system kind of like this but a 2012 MMO can't.
