The downloadable application to play the game requires admin rights?

No way folks. Provide a method to play without giving up control of my PC.

StarTrekOnline_EN_ST.17.20120104b.exe wants admin rights? Not going to happen.

If you can't provide a SAFE game, you're not going to be played.

If you can't run without admin rights, you're not SAFE.

Won't happen. That's an issue with Windows, not necessarily the game. Funny because my PC doesn't need admin rights to run it, and I have Win7.

How about right clicking it and selecting "Run as Administrator" IF your account is the only account on it. Oh, and STO is perfectly safe. I seriously doubt either PWE or Cryptic got to where they are releasing shady programs.

Oh, and another thing: That file you referenced is the installer package. Most installers require admin rights to work, due to the necessity of writing to the registry.

Of course that file needs admin rights, it's the installer and you need admin access to be able to get the proper write privileges.

The game itself runs on a standard account just fine, no admin rights needed, no UAC warning, nothing.

Way to get all worked up over nothing.
