So, I have searched the forums (and the Wiki) a while now and I keep finding that Attack Pattern Alpha is a "Tac" only skill.

The problem I have is that I spent 3 points in it as an Engineer Captain. I am wondering if those points are useful to me at all. If not, why am I able to specialize in it?

Any information will be appreciated... thank you in advance.

Attack Pattern Alpha is indeed Tac only, however AP Beta, Delta, and Omega are available on Tac BOffs

Attack Pattern Alpha is a Tactical Captain only ability. But

Tactical Bridge Officers have three Attach Pattern skills that use. Attach Pattern Beta and Delta are similar skills. The both put an damage resistance debuff on enemy targets (i.e. debuffs targets take more damage from any source), but they are totally opposite on how they do it. Attack Pattern Beta will put a short duration debuff on any target you shoot at and hit. Attack Patern Delta is placed on a *friendly* taret that includes you. Any enemy shooting at that friendly target will get the debuffs. (The friednly target also get a damage resistance buff for the duration which is always nice.

Attach Pattern Omega is the tried skills. It's similar to Attack Pattern Alpha in that it gives a damage buff, a speed buff, but it also gives you immunity to snares and holds for the duration. It's a nice way to slip out of Tractor Beams and Eject'ed Warp Plasma.

So it's not a wast of skill points. For a non Escort ship, yout can get Attach Pattern BetaI and Delta I as a Lt rank BOFF skill. AP Omega I is a Lt Commander level skill

Correct Attack Pattern Alpha is a Tac only skill.

I wouldn't put to many points into attack patterns as an engineer due to cruisers have limited tac bridge officer slots and you'll want to use those for weapon abilitys to bolster your ships dps (Don't expect an Engineer in a cruiser to dish out huge dps).

It all depends on what ships you plan to fly when you reach higher lvl.

If it helps i use http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/ when planning my builds you should be able to find a few build ideas on that site as well.

As an Engineer you may have to re-skill but you can still make use of some Attack Patterns via Tactical BOFFS

The Attack Pattern skill affects Tactical Bridge Officer abilities Attack Patterns Beta, Delta and Omega. So you may be able to still use the skill to buff these abilities (if you want to use them.) or simply ignore them.

You are misreading your skills. You don't have points in Alpha, as you can't even get it. And the skill can't have points put into it anyway, not even for a tactical. You are most likely referring to the generat Attack Patterns skill which buffs any sort of attack pattern, not just Alpha.

You can get all the other attack patterns except Alpha.
