How is Multi-vector mode a gimmick?

I've found that the FLeet escort is rather sluggish compared to the retrofit defiant, so i run the defiant instead. However the defiant has an extra tac BO slot that i would happily loose for the one the fleet escort has, so thats the price.

I jus twish we could buy extra BO slots and console slots for ships though, that would be cool, or even just to be able to change the configuration of them i.e. swap a sci console slot to an eng one, and be able to change a tac officer to a Eng one.
