Hi, everyone. I started playing STO recently, and while I generally try to find answers on my own via the wikis and the forums, I've found that there's still a lot of information about older versions of the game floating around making it a bit more difficult to find up-to-date answers.

One thing I noticed is that missions seem to scale up to the level of the highest ranked player in the instance, is this correct? I've only been playing for a few days but I'm Captain Grade 5 atm (lv35), and when I tried to introduce a friend of mine to the game and play the SS Azura mission with him he kept getting 1-shot by the level 35 enemies. Talk about a mood killer! Is there any way to scale things down to his level, even if this means my starship and ground powers are adjusted accordingly? Or is he pretty much stuck unless I re-roll a new character?

In a similar vein, would it be possible for me to roll a level 1 Klingon and play with him after the tutorial level? Or are the factions kept completely separate? I think Klingons start at level 20 anyways, don't they?

Finally, is there a general consensus on ideal or near-ideal Endgame specs for Tactical captains? I'd imagine my primary job is to deal as much damage as humanly possible, while being able to take enough hits to not be overwhelmed when taking fire.

At the moment, my skill tree looks as follows:

Space:
9/9 Starship Attack Pattersn
9/9 Starship Weapons Training
9/9 Starship Energy Weapons
9/9 Starship Projectile Weapons
9/9 Starship Maneuvers
9/9 Starship Targeting Systems
9/9 Structural Integrity
6/9 Starship Impulse Thrusters
9/9 Starship Warp Core Potential
9/9 Starship Shield Performance
9/9 Starship Shield Emitters
9/9 Starship Shield Systems

Ground:
9/9 Grenades
9/9 Weapon Proficiency
9/9 Combat Specialist
9/9 PS Generator

I'm flying a Defiant-class Tactical Escort with:

Fore weapons:
Purple Disruptor Dual Heavy Cannons Mk VIII [DMG]x3
Purple Disruptor Dual Heavy Cannons Mk VIII [DMG]x2 [CritD]x1
Blue Tetryon Dual Heavy Cannons Mk VIII [Acc] [CritD]
Photon Torpedo Launcher Mk VIII

Aft:
2x Green Polaron Turret Mk VIII [DMG]

In my Tac consoles I have 2x +10% all Energy damage and 1x +10% Kinetic damage

BOs:
Tactical Team I
Cannon: Rapid Fire I
Cannon: Scatter Volley II
Attack Pattern Omega III

Torpedo:High Yield I
Torpedo: Spread II

Emergency Power to Shields I
Extend Shields I

Jam Targeting Sensors I
Tractor Beam II

Is there anything I should look into changing?

Likewise, is there a general consensus on which rank 40 ship performs better for Tactical officers at between the Advanced and Fleet Escorts? I'd imagine it's probably the Fleet Escort, but it's so ugly compared to the Prometheus! I only get one of them for free, so I want to make sure I pick the right one.

Sorry for the wall of text, and thanks in advance for the help!

Edit: One more quick question! Aside from replaying missions and hitting the Mirror Invasion events, what's the best way for me to grind out EXP? I enjoy PvE events, but they really don't seem to give all that many skill points and whenever I find a random "Encounter", it's always over by the time I zone in. Is this normal? Should I really just go back and spam old missions?

Thanks again!

I'mma take this one at a time.

1. If you're gonna help someone lower level, you need to be invited to their team (or invite them to a team an make them the team leader). THere will be a button next to their name, to the left. When you click it, it'll match your level to theirs, because yes, the enemies scale to the highest level, and this will make your level temporarily match his. I say this instead of him scaling to yours because even though he'll match your level, he'll still be using very outdated equipment (for that level) and will still die relatively quickly.

2. Klingons start at level 20. You cannot go on missions with him as you two are different factions and thus get different missions (with some exceptions, but you still can't do missions with him as he's of a different faction).

3. I'm nowhere near endgame, so I'm leaving all that alone.

4. Replaying missions will be your best bet for XP compared to everything else. And since rewards scale to your level, you can easily just sell any rewards you don't like/want.

Thanks for the info!

I never knew about that level sync button. That's just what I was looking for!

It's a shame that KDF and UFP forces can't co-mingle. It shouldn't be too much of a problem since I'll be able to just sync down to his level on my UFP character anyways. Good to know!

Just make sure you're level synched -before- you enter the system where a mission takes place.

feds and klinks can only do stf's together at the moment,

fleet escort seems more popular (i got 2 on different chars) but they are not 'better' per say, you get the play style right all the free ships have there own +/- ratio that levels them compared to the others.

for leveling do patrol missions (last look they were giving 2500+ sp each) and doff missions are a nice bit of free sp.

one last thing when you are buying skills look at the returns it's normaly +10 for 1-3, +6 for 4-6 and only +4 or some thing like that from 7-9, if you spread your skills a bit more you might find it better

Hi, gunblazer already did a great job taking care of questions 1, 2, and 4 so I'll tackle # 3 and try to help with your build. Also the game is currently undergoing a lot of changes to game mechanics so a lot of the usual advice givers are busy testing the changes and tweaking their builds as new changes come.

Shipwise both the Advanced and Fleet escort are perfectly viable ships to fly at end game it all depends on your play style.

The Fleet escort is better for raw direct damage and survivability thanks to its extra Engineering console and power. (personally I agree with you on the looks department of the standard skins though I do love the look of the Maelstrom skin from the C-store)

The Advanced escort has more tricks thanks to its science powers so you can do things like tractor and tachyon beams or things like scramble sensors plus it's science console slots make great places to dump universal consoles like the Borg Assimilated console (a must have for anyone trying to do direct damage) and the pay to win consoles from the c-store ships.

As for the ideal ship if you looking for DPS escorts are the way to go, though many do like to mix captain and ship types. I've played Tacticals in cruisers and Engineers in escorts and I've found that hybrid builds can help cover some of the weaknesses of more "standard" tracks of matching captains with ships.

Question do you intend to say mostly in space or do you enjoy the ground game more? Because it looks like your maxing out all your ground skills and if you plan on playing mostly in space you don't really need to do that. The minimum points you have to spend on ground is 66,000 after that points spent into ground ts points that can be better spent in space.

Skill point wise it's not necessary to max out all your skills the sweet spots are 3 ranks and 6 ranks in any skill the last 3 ranks generally don't give you much more effectiveness and those points can probably be spent on another skill. There are exceptions though skills like Starship Maneuvers & Starship Targeting Systems are really nice to have maxed out I'll include a link at the bottom for a good page on what your skill points actually get you.

Other then that a few minor suggestions, it's better to use one single energy type because that way you can use the type specific tactical consoles and that gives you a higher bonus per console the the general one. Same for torpedo consoles.

Also you really should find room in your build for a hull heal like Engineering Team or Hazard Emitters. In all fairness I've not seen Extend Shields be that good an idea on an escort you have so few engineering powers as it is it feels wasteful to use it on a power you can use for yourself.

If you plan on PvPing I strongly suggest Science Team to clear debuffs like jam/scramble sensors and most importantly subnuc. nothing kills an escort faster then a subnuc plus a tractor beam and about 10 seconds of sustained fire.

Here's a tool to help plan your builds so you don't waste respecs http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/

Finally here's a great page with info about what your skill points actually give you effect wise http://home.comcast.net/~amicus/Skil...%20Effects.htm

You dont have to make them team leader. You just need to make him 'squad' leader. Then you can level match down to his level. This way, you remain team leader and be able to control team invites, loot settings, etc,

Fed and KDF can team in end game STFs. (see my sig for info on that). They can also team up in private PVP matches.

Leveling is a lot faster than before. You shouldn't need to replay any missions (at least not for XP. You may want to to get certain rewards). There are plenty of regular missions to get you up to RA. You might want to check and make sure you have opened up a new front. First Klingon, then Romulan, then Cardassian, then borg, Plus the old featured episodes are mixed in there too.
