# 1 Galaxy Retrofit v Sovereign
02-15-2012, 07:27 PM
Hi gang...looking for your thoughts on whether there's any appreciable difference between flying a Gal retrofit versus sticking with my Sovereign at level 50.

Aside from the slight boff and console differences (which are negligible anyway) they're basically the same ship, but the Sovvy doesn't have that useless saucer-sep ability/console - which in my case sits there gathering dust so it might as well have 2 Sci consoles after all.

The Gal retrofit was ostensibly an upgrade, since you get to pick it at VA after riding around in the Sovvy at RA, but it doesn't really appear to be. My two main Eng boffs are contributing all the abilities I need them to, and the Ensign feels redundant...I'd get more mileage out of a Tac Ensign with Tactical Team, especially fighting the Borg.

So I guess my real question is: did anybody else just stay with their RA-level ship and upgrade the equipment upon hitting VA? It's just a PVE boat so it's not that big a deal but I'm just curious...you'd think the new ship would be better somehow.

I stuck with my Sovvy before switching to an MVAE for STFs. I found the Galaxy class boats to be, well, boats. I needed more maneuverability.

the sovvie is the better ship, and here are my reasons why i think this

Better turn rate
Slightly higher firepower
3 tact console slots instead of 2
a lt tact boff and a ensign tact boff this makes all the difference in combat. as i equip the ensing with tact team 1 and the lt with ths 1&2

If you have the c-store points and want to fly a galaxy the galaxy-x is the better ship as boff wise they are pretty much identical although the gal-x has the same turn rate as the galaxy but slightly better hull and has the phaser lance.

The galaxy X is a bit of thought to fly but can be a very good fire base however I prefer the Sovy more as it is much more durable and certainly turns better and is more mobile.

Its more on your play style which one you want to fly really.

I switch between the following vessels; Sovereign,Galaxy-X, Galaxy-R & Excelsior. They all have their perks and their drawbacks. I find the Galaxy classes to be more suitable for tanking, and the Sovereign and Excelsiors for DPS. I can tank with any of these hulls, so it doesn't matter. They're all fun to fly. Hell, I've even been flying a T4 Intrepid in STFs lately. That's always fun.

I don't know if you noticed, but the Galaxy's Separated sauser has gain its own BO powers. It now has EMS, and anti-matter spread which saves me from having to use my slow recharging, anti-spread. As Galaxy and Galaxy X you attract all the threat becuase of your slow turn rate. Every PVP player in the map seems to b gunning for you. What I did to combat the problem is arm a set of rear to tormpedo lauchers and wto phaser banks in the rear. I use 3 phaser banks and one Quantum torpedo launcher in front and 2 phaser banks, one transphasic torpedo cluster., and one photon or quantum torpedo launcher in rear. Set your tac bridge officer to have BO and heavy torpedo volley( I forgot the turm used). Once you do that you will see escorts lay off your back because you have just as much teeth there ase you do in the ther front. When fighting the Borg just swap out the one of the quantum or photon torpedos for a tricobalt device. You will be killing Cubes faster than you know.

Have you considered the Excelsior?

I have a Tac officer with Beam Overload 1 and High-Yield Torp 2...she's been on both boats and yeah, the general strategy is to burn 'em down with the beam broadside then get either my nose or tail on-target for the HYT salvo.

Although I put a green DBB in the nose for a little more head-on firepower and I have two beams and a Quantum launcher in the stern.

I ended up reviewing my fits post-skill-revamp and improving them a bit...then put all the best tier gear back on the Sovereign. Took her out and within about 60 seconds I started wondering why I'd ever gone to the Gal retrofit. Sovereign is much more agile and even with the same gear I have like 1000 more shield HP per facing on the Sovvy.

Next on my list of things to do is refit my Commander-level Excelsior and take her out again (although I was shocked to find it's C-Store only now!? I bought mine with EC way back when). I'm reluctant to shell out for the VA-level one though.

Well most of the time, I'm flying my Defiant retrofit cause it owns.

But when Im in the mood for cruiser play, I use either the Sovvy or Galaxy X. I like the Sovvy in general due to its better agility and still packs a punch. However when I want to tank and fly around in a Galaxy, I use the Galaxy X. With nearly the same weapon set-up as the Sov it performs similar in overall DPS. However the Galaxy X has a bit more initial burst damage when using the Cloak bonus and the Lance phaser. The Galaxy's (all of them) still turns like the Titanic though...even when using the +35% turn rate console. The both have pros and cons over each other...but both are very much useable depending on what your wanting to do at the time. But I play both and have fun playing in either one.
