Hi - I just came back after about a year-long hiatus, and resumed my commander tier (20-30) missions.

I've come across an obnoxious problem though, when battling the romulan Mogai (sp?) escorts - I'm fairly consistently hitting MASSIVE spikes of torpedo damage - I've counted between 27,000 for photon torpedo volley, and over 30,000 from an overloaded plasma torpedo - this is not into a down shield either...this is against mostly intact shields (hard to gauge for sure, but still white/blue) and mostly intact hull (over 90%)

I'm not kidding - i've lost 2 shields AND 50%+ hull to a single overloaded plasma

now, I won't claim that my ship should be indestructible, but I'm using the excelsior class cruiser with a decent array of gear - and the levels of damage i'm experiencing from any single attack are far in excess to what I've witnessed so far, and seem to be thoroughly unreasonable

I'm playing at normal or advanced (hard to remember for sure, my crew is still taking injuries, but my ship doesn't seem to be) difficulty level

I'm wondering if anyone can clue me in - has this become relatively "normal", or am I experiencing an unusual occurrence?

For me it has always been the D'deridex-class warbirds that tractor then launch 5 high yield plasma torpedoes into the hull. The Mogai escorts are more of a pain to kill, but not as painful as getting whacked by a warbird.

Your best defense against the high yield plasma torpedoes is Beam Fire At Will, and Torpedo Spread. If you're in an escort, Cannon Scatter Volley might help. Attack Pattern Omega, and Polarize Hull are good to break tractor beams.

Speaking of plasma, Make a bee line for that Mogai, and vent plasma all over his sorry ***. That will even things up when he wants to dance all over you.

The Excelsior was nurfed to death with Season 5. I used to fly it and ended up switching to an escort after season 5 started. No matter what I did I couldn't turn it back into a useable ship. Before season 5 it was kick a**. After season 5 it was scrap metal. I'm not saying that is the problem your having but it might help to switch to a better ship.

Also, new weapons and abilities were added to all enemies with season 5. Some easy missions got a little harder.

All my ship testing is done in Karrat, PVP, PVE and neutral zone dailies.

Those plasma torpedoes are pure death. In the past, you could at least shoot them down. Now, you tend to miss most of the time (they made it harder to hit small, fast-moving targets).

I got some advice on this from another thread: Equip your Sci BOff with Tractor Beam Repulsor. This thing is great. You wait until some torpedoes are heading right for you, hit the power, and they all get destroyed. Plus, the ships that fired them at you get pushed back. Since I tried this technique, these missions have been a breeze.

There are some other powers you can use for this, too. Cannon Spread for Tac BOffs will fire at everything in the general vacinity, and they hit torpedoes well. Also, if the torps are heading your way and the Repulsors are on cool-down, hit Tactical Team. The torps will do some hull damage, but you'll end up with full shields.

Other Science powers I read about that were good for this were Photonic Shockwave, Tyken's Rift, and Gravity Well, though I haven't tried them yet for this strategy.

The biggest thing I've seen with these missions is how survivable the Mogai's are. With 2 heavy Mk X polaron cannons and a blue phaser array forward, a quantum torp fore and aft, mostly MK X consoles and polaron turrets aft, and the Mogai shields at advanced difficulty seem tough to bring down. When they do fail, they come back up fast or still show blue though the prompt says enemy shields failed. I use an Advanced Escort with Mk X +14 speed x 2 impulse engine so I fly faster than the uber plasma torps and torpedo spread and a defense console vaporizes any that start to get close. Gets rid of the pesky cloaked tractor mines too.

But yes, the Mog's damage spikes do make fighting one, let alone more than one, a PITA. The mission I just completed had a Mog and a D'Ridex (or whatever it's called) and there is no way I would survive both of those. Fortunately it bugged and I got the big bird to activate without the Mog. I blew it apart after about 15 min, finishing the mission, then stayed to smoke the Mog. The AI wouldn't activate so I shot it until it should have gone boom but it never activated and wouldn't die.

I've noticed this mega-damage thing with everything Romulan lately. In "Trapped," I got to the bridge of the Hirogen ship and then, suddenly, everyone's dead, swarmed by about twenty of them. When the swarm doesn't happen, it takes dozens of shots to finish them off, but their weapons tear my *** up. I even have it on Normal difficulty, generally Mark X stuff.

What I've noticed most about the Mogais is that, when they're down to low hull and you can't fire on them for a little bit (jammed, out of range, etc.), suddenly their shields become super-effective.

During Leveling i noticed the Spike damage of the Mogai also - my conclusion was, as i had some spike (but not that severe) encounter with outer NPC ships also, that some of the NPC Torpdeo attaks actuall do NOT do reduce dmg to shields. So if a Torpedo will do 30k dmg+ he will down your shields and half of your hull no matter what everytime your hit...
I don't know if im right with my conclusion, but thats what my feeling was on the odd Highnumbers even with shields up...
