I love to PVP in space settings. It is a lot of fun for me. Usually when I hit a new level, I suck for a bit while I'm getting used to a new ship, settings, gear, etc. But I get good pretty quick. Now I'm up to the cap at VA. And I seem to REALLY suck here for an extended period of time. I've got some great weapons with high dps...but they barely seem to scratch my opponents. I see damages of 2 or 5 or 6....lots of single digits. I've never had that before. Torps are a little better. At the same time, their weapons seem to suck the life out of my shields pretty quick. And I just acquired some new Borg super shield that is supposed to be great. I went through and did a respec on my character. Nothing seems to really help. Any suggestions or words of wisdom? Anyone try going "missile boat"? I'm using mostly plasma cannons with a couple of phasers. I'm using the free Odyssey class ship. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

A not so insignificant portion of players at VA have been PvPing for a long long time, some since the game was released. Basically they've had a long long time to become familiar with the mechanics.

If you ran into these players at lower levels, you'd be having the exact same problem.

If we're talking beam arrays, they'll only tickle a tanking players shields. A generic Mk XI beam array does around 165 DPS, while a dual heavy cannon does around 240.

On anything other then an escort (and a tactical captain in an escort at that), torps are pretty rubbish. Shield tanking is quite easy and if so much as a slither of shield is up, the torp will do worthless damage. Heck, with all the kinetic resists at VA, chance are if the torp was to hit the hull it'll do laughable damage.

If it's the Borg shield you've got, part of the borg set, it's pretty rubbish on cruisers and escorts (unless you have shield power right at max which boosts its regen, even then it won't stop an escort penetrating your shields without tanking skills). The rest of the borg set is fantastic though for the set bonuses.

In the case of the plasma cannons, drop them. Players at VA will generally have STF gear, like MACO shields, so most will have resists to plasma.

Quick run down on Mk XI weapons and their DPS for you (using probably out of date information from sTOwiki):-
Turrets (360 arc) - 126
Beam Arrays (270 arc) - 168
Cannons (180 arc) - 202
Dual Beam Bank (90 arc) - 219
Dual cannons/dual heavy cannons (45 arc) - 244

Note also that unlike beams, cannon type weapons can have their DPS buffed for 10 seconds in a focused attack (as opposed to fire at will, which will attack anything in range.)

If you want to do damage, get into an escort and use dual heavy cannons. If you're desperate to stick with a cruiser, the only really DPS worthy ones are the c-store ships, like the Excelsior retrofit. If you want a "free" cruiser, the best one to pick is the Assault Cruiser.

Here's some pointers:-
*Get a field generator console - This is a MUST have. Virtually every ship at VA has it since it increases shield cap by 35%. These don't stack, so no need to get more the one.
*Tact team - I was running a new toon through lower level PvP and was amazed at how few players use this skill. Now some of these players are trickling to VA PvP, the lack of a tactical team means they blow up pretty easily. What it does is fast auto-redistributes your shields and like the field generator console, is pretty much a must have.
*Dump torps - Anything other then the hargh'pengs are useless, unless you're an escort.
*Invest in weapons with [ACC] mods - Accuracy is perhaps the most important weapon mod in PvP, especially when facing fast moving escorts.
*Don't use boarding party - It's countered by tact team, which just about everyone has.
*Don't use jam sensors - there are so many much more effective tanking skills, like hazard emitters, polarize hull, sci team and transfer shield strength.
*Keep shield resistance high - shield resistance is buffed by your shield power levels and abilities like emergency power to shields and transfer shield strength.
*Speed buffs defense.

Okay that helps explain some of it. For starters drop the Odyssey, it's good for only one thing which is healing/tanking. Infact damage wise all fed cruisers pretty much suck (they suck at damage at lower levels, however hardly anyone is all that experienced at tanking, so don't really notice). With some small exceptions, fed cruisers are generally only good for healing and tanking in PvP.

Wow! Lots of good info there. Thank you for taking the time to explain all that. I appreciate it. It looks like I have managed to purchase the exact wrong kind of weapons all the way around. Ugh...that stinks. It will take a while to get some good stuff of another flavor.

I tried an escort at an earlier level and did not really care for it. To be honest, it was too maneuverable for me. I tried some science vessels and they had about the right maneuverability for me. I guess I could respec again and kill any turn buffs and maybe that would make the escort manageable for me.

The ship I was using before the Odyssey was the Star Cruiser. I'm all out of free ships. Maybe I will save for the Multi-Vector Advanced Escort. It has a lower turn rate too.

I thought I was "tanking" in the Odyssey. I guess I still have a lot to learn. I wish I had not gotten rid of my other shields when I got those Borg shields. Another bad judgement! Jeez...I don't think I made any good choices!

Oh well...at least I have a direction to go with my next build. Thanks again for all your help!
