For the Federation that flagship has always been a starship called the USS Enterprise. Every Enterprise has always been a guardian of galactic peace, been at the forefront of exploration, discovering new lifeforms, making contact with new civilizations. Boldly going where no one has gone before...
This has been addressed in earlier posts the idea of the Enterprise D being the flagship of the Federation comes from ignorance of what the term flagship means. But your right that is what flagship now canonically means in Star Trek still its a facepalm for those who know naval parlance.

Nowadays I'm pretty sure Aircraft Carriers serve the purpose of flagship in the US Navy although they are certainly a prime target, Carrier battle groups are basically designed around protecting them so it makes sense. I remember for a time the US Navy had a special ship class made for Admiral with a lot of dedicated communications tech but I'm pretty sure all of these have been retired. In the 1700s and 1800s the flagships of the European navies were pretty massive ships of the line.

Yes. The primary real life meaning is the ship that's is the carries the Flag Officer of the Fleet. But there are other meaning of flagship in modern usage as well. Flagship meaning the biggest, the best or most important. Those lesset meaning is what the Enterprise represents.

I like to think of the distinction in this way. The Enterprise is the Federation Flagship. Ships carrying/commanded by an Starleet Admiral are the Flagship of a Fleet.

In regards to nameing the C-Store variants, why no just use some real world inspirations. For planes, they just tack on a letter to indicate the variant. i.e. F-16 C. The US Navy uses a similar scheme. LSV is a Logistical Support Vessel. The variant has have additional destinations. Helicopter Carrier variant is LSV-HC. Troop Carrier variant is LSV-TC, semi-submersible variant is LSV-SSV.

I'll have to ponder on the Odyssey variants. But off the top of my head...The base line version has the shuttle base on the read so, Small Vessel Support: Odysseys SVS. C-Store version, Tactical Support or Escort Carrier? Odyssey TS or Odyssey EC.

Or simply we have the full bugget Odyssey class, with saucer separation, auxiliary vessel and additional BO, and we have the low bugget (as nebula are to galaxy) with one of that features.

Really we known that in crisys eras, buggets are very limited and with the klingons, borgs, romulans, 8472 species, breen, organians.... the bugget must be very short. I question to me.... the klingon ship become with cutting bugget measures as well?....

Thanks for the fun, sorry for my bad english.

P.D.: my eternal gratitude to all team members that READ the comm chat in STF and don't destroy nanite generators or cubes before time!!!!

So I guess the word "variants" could mean, one with saucer sep, one with aux craft and one with just the extra uni boff slot?

I do hope this is not the case!

Who am I kidding.....
