Universe-wise, I see no reason not to implement a carrier ship. I'm just a little concerned about how it would function gameplay-wise.
The fun of controlling a ship (whether it's a light escort or a star cruiser) is flying into combat yourself and being in total control of your attacks and defences.
With a carrier, the fighters would be doing most of the work (the payoff would be that the carrier is too large/slow to be the active role in the fight) - you'd be reduced to hanging back and issuing orders to the fighters, while using your guns to pick off other threats.
Which is great if a complete "fighter direction/management system" comes along with the carrier ship (giving carrier gameplay the strategy element it needs), but otherwise, it's just a case of "Launch Fighters" and wait.
