IIRC the explanation in the technical manuals was that the 4 nacelled configuration allowed extended cruise times at higher warp allowing these ships to conduct longer range missions.

This was accomplished by operating one pair of nacelles at full power, while the other pair of nacelles was powered down or operated at low power levels. When the coils in the active/hi-power nacelles reached their peak operating time, they would be throttled down while the other pair would power-up allowing the ship to maintain it's maximum cruising speed. Alternating nacelle pairs would allow these ships to conduct longer range missions than any standard dual nacelle configured ships.

There also is a reference, in the DS9 technical Manual, to a Nova class starship outfitted with 4 nacelles that is used as a high speed courier vessel.

It really is a cool looking ship.

If only they would allow ship module slots to be refitted as you advance in rank all would be good...

The Tier 3 Cruiser is one of my favourite ship designs in this game, i think it's a shame we cannot use it later in the game.
As the other Tier 3 Ship designs i think there should be a Tier 5 version of them. I was very dissappointed when i began playing STO that we can't upgrade our ship.
I think the devs should introduce Tier 5 versions of those ship designs, the sooner the better.

the cheyenne with its super low quality model is a cool concept, but turned out tiny and ugly. regardless, the in game cheyenne turned out to be one of the best looking of the original, mostly poor, in game models when a bit of creative license was taken with it.

i'd like to see an overhaul of the tier 3 cruisers, starting with the cheyenne. it would be built as the original model was built, with its saucer consisting of 2 under slung portion of a galaxy class saucer stacked on top of each other, with 3 quarters of a galaxy neck attached to each. the more aft quarter of it containing shuttle bays and impulse engines wouldn't be there.

this would result in the cheyenne being quite a bit bigger, good, the whole tier 3 cruiser line was smaller then the tier 3 escorts. keep the details the current model has like the deflector, intrepid style sensor arrays, shuttle bay hatches etc... each of the 4 nacelles should be about as long as a galaxy's, only half as wide and square. the result would be the ship haveing the same total amount of nacelle as a galaxy, on a much smaller ship. this would result in a ship with about 3/4 the galaxy's firepower, half its size, with about the same warp capability or better, a dangerous heavy cruiser to be sure.

the dakota should be done up the same as above, only using the venture components.

the stargazer is basically a fine shape, but lacks detail. clean it up and 2409 its look a bit and it would be good. then make a tier 5 version, preferably replacing the excelsior refit

I would like to keep the ship parts that are already in the game and add the ones you mentioned as extra ship parts for the tier 5 versions.

I would L O V E to be able to fly my Tier 3 Cruiser one of my Characters.
I know some may not entirely understand why, but i fell in love with this ship: LINK, LINK, LINK
I would find it extremely AWESOME if it would get the same stats of the Tier 5 Excelsior.

that the exact configuration of mine, love the look of that combination. with the changes i mentioned it wouldn't look to much different, still exact same shape. it would just look like it was clearly an offshoot of the galaxy project useing the common parts and all. oh, and for the stargazer, those engines need mirroring like they are on the prometheus, you can see that they are not in those pics

i liked the T3 cruisers...

so easy way:

in T3 there is an Excelsior(Adv. Heavy Cruiser)..and a refit T5 version (Adv. Heavy Cruiser refit), with a number of quicktravel abilities.
So give us a refit T5 Stargazer (and variants), with same stats/BO-Layout then T5 refit Excelsior, without quicktravel. finish. and make the c-points less then the Refit Excelsior. as a kind of low-budget version ^^ of a refit Heavy cruiser.

Refit Heavy Cruiser: without quicktravel
Adv Refit Heavy Cruiser: with quicktravel

That is maybe the easiest way.

To be honest, I always thought the Stargazer class was going to be an end game ship, but now, after 2 years, I think back figure... "Why is this ship where it is?"

Am I the only one wondering why the Stargazer was hyped, and then lost in the myriad messes?
Actually, the "heavy cruiser" platform works better than the "explorer cruiser" does. You give up one weapon, some hull, crew and a few boff stations and consoles, but its totally usable all the way up to Rear Admiral. I know people who appreciated it more than any of the tier 4 ships designs.

I love this ship as well! I use it as my Vice Admiral Flagship. My variant is all Stargazer with a Cheyenne upper pylon and a Dakota lower pylon. It works great. Even in the STF's . I do wish that there was a Tier 5 version , but I'm really happy with it now. I don't like the look of the other ships. Except for the Constitution (TOS) and the refit. The TOS version doesn't look quite right I'm afraid, though.
