# 1 rainbow weapons

maybe this has been answered someplace else but i couldn't find it.

Why do some people run a rainbow of weapons?

doesn't that actually hurt you more than it actually helps?

running 6 beam weapons at once it can be hard to keep the weapon power up, but 4+ different types of beam weapons it would be impossible to keep the weapon power up.

The reason I ask is that I am seeing more and more people doing it in STF's and it seems to hurt the team more than it helps.

The power drain is the same no matter what kind of beam (of the same Mk) you're running. Even base damage is the same for the same Mk of beam weapon. It's the secondary effects that are different depending on beam type.

Where it 'hurts' is in the weapon boost consoles, as the generic 'energy weapon' consoles provide less of a boost than a specific energy type.

Well, once upon a time if you ran a rainbow you'd be reducing your DPS. I'm not sure how much the redesign of the skill tree reduced that, but certainly must consoles are directed towards certain typeof weapons so it'ss likely that there will still be some loss of DPS.

I find it's a mistake made by people who are new to STFs. They hit VA and immediately think they are ready, but only over time do they learn more about ship builds, earning and crafting new weapons and comsoles, and generally finding out what works best with their skills and division. Lets face it, you don't need to worry about any of that just to level up to VA. It's only really when you get to play STFs and PvE that this because necessary.

For looks and fun. I have always used Plasma beams because I prefer the colour :p

It all comes down to what ship yer in.

With cruisers with only 2 tactical slots, you can put on a pair of DEM's and rainbow away without any serious side effects.. Thus my U.S.S. Simply Fabulous

On an escort, or a ship with three or more tactical consoles is where stacking damage really gets the noticeable boost, where consoles are 26-30% each over the 16-18% the DEM's give.

Not saying this doesn't stop people from making skittle shooters, but they're hurting themselves just as much as the team by doing so.

A lot of times it is because you can level up before you get a full complement of gear. For instance, my alternate Fed character has a smattering of MKVIII, MK X, and MKXI weapons of tetryons, disruptors, and polarons as I work to get all of her gear properly upgraded. I now run some STFs with this char and another to get enough gear so that this leap will be the leap home (to a fully upgraded ship).

I don't think there is a DPS penalty, but you get hurt in that you can't get consoles to stack better and you can't squeeze as much damage out of your ship.
