The Sovereign has the more useful bridge officer layout, but the Galaxy R has saucer seperation. This isn't as useful as you'd think because Cryptic's method of making it "more shooty" is the same as for escorts, which doesn't work since they brought in the hard cap on power levels. This is something that's been brought up and ignored months ago, and still hasn't changed.
I switched back to the Sovereign...I'll hang on to the Gal retrofit since I got it for free and now it's a C-Store item, but all her weapons and gear have been stripped.
The Galaxy is just too slow and clumsy for my taste...maybe I didn't have a perfectly optimized build on my Galaxy-R but I didn't see that extreme tanking ability at all...Sovereign feels both tankier and shootier, and as previously mentioned it's more agile.
Although I did spring for an Excelsior-R and it's crazy good...plus the Excelsior is a beautiful ship. I'm a little sad that I can't use both Emergency to Weapons and Shields 3 now but two copies of Emergency to Weps 1 works too.
All these ships are close to indestructible in PVE play...time to raise my difficulty level, I think.
I ended up reviewing my fits post-skill-revamp and improving them a bit...then put all the best tier gear back on the Sovereign. Took her out and within about 60 seconds I started wondering why I'd ever gone to the Gal retrofit. Sovereign is much more agile and even with the same gear I have like 1000 more shield HP per facing on the Sovvy.
I see your Sovereign's 1000 more Shield strength and raise you 12649 shield strength with 151 regeneration every 6 secs, from my Galaxy Refit. I'm using Covariant Shield XI from Remans or use the old vary rare Covariant X Shield, add the field generater and you boost up capacity. Its all about how you set up your individual ship. Each ship has to be set up differently to max out results.
i fly the galaxy retrofit and love it better than any of the others, i have more options with it than any of the others. ive played with people in STFs and in PVPs, i can tank cubes np (solo), and i do 300k dmg easy in pvp. knowing how to fly it and when to use the saucer separation and how to use it is big, i would have to say that most folks that bad talk the retro just plain out dont know how to fly it. idc what you have to say about that fact lol ive made too many "experts" go "poof" or seen the same in STFs. With the saucer separation THERE IS NO CRUISER that can keep up with you, out turn you, out gun you (if yall were using the same weapon setup) ive met VERY few people that can take me on 1 on 1 and even fewer npcs that dont make me laugh. but all of that doesnt mean anything if you dont know your ship or it doesnt fit your play style. the galaxy with the saucer separation is one of the harder ship to master and if your not using the saucer separation while flying the refit then lol its not for you.
I had a think about the boff setup on the galaxy and she really should have the same boff layout as the nebula expect changing the cmd sci to cmd engineer, and vice versa. Would make her more versatile and maybe more useful.
Hi gang...looking for your thoughts on whether there's any appreciable difference between flying a Gal retrofit versus sticking with my Sovereign at level 50.
Aside from the slight boff and console differences (which are negligible anyway) they're basically the same ship, but the Sovvy doesn't have that useless saucer-sep ability/console - which in my case sits there gathering dust so it might as well have 2 Sci consoles after all.
The Gal retrofit was ostensibly an upgrade, since you get to pick it at VA after riding around in the Sovvy at RA, but it doesn't really appear to be. My two main Eng boffs are contributing all the abilities I need them to, and the Ensign feels redundant...I'd get more mileage out of a Tac Ensign with Tactical Team, especially fighting the Borg.
So I guess my real question is: did anybody else just stay with their RA-level ship and upgrade the equipment upon hitting VA? It's just a PVE boat so it's not that big a deal but I'm just curious...you'd think the new ship would be better somehow.
The RA ships are just as good as the C-Store ships, there really is no major advantage for using the C-Store ones. I don't know where this logic comes from that the C-Store ships are so much better. It's called Game Balance, he RA ships will generally be on par with the C-Store ships or it would throw balance completely out the window. The Day a C-Store ship adds an extra BOFF ability is the day they become better. Tier 5 Ships currently have 12 BOFF abilities split between 5 BOFFs although there are exceptions to this like the Bird of Prey only having 11. And yes, the C-Store ships below T5 are all better than the normal ones.
Take for Example the AE vs the MVAE, the C-Store ship will generally do less damage than it's RA equivalent but what you get is some tricks and a Lt.Com Sci slot which makes the ship that bit more useful in a STF as you can pack more heals or Sci CC's.
The Galaxy R is a great ship, it's an icon and it gets better handling than most other cruisers if you run without the saucer when ever possible. It's BOFF layout is that bit harder to use than say a Sovreign but you can do something with it.
I don't know where the poster who thinks the Galaxy R gets more shields from is getting his info. AFAIK their is no bonus to Shields with the Gal R over say any other cruiser (Oddy gets 15% more)
