Nah The Odyssey Tactical Cruiser cannot pew pew with Dual Heavy Cannons. The Bortasqu' can, but that is a bad idea due to its less than stellar turn rate.
If the Tactical Cruiser could mount Dual Heavy Cannons, then it would be bad because all you would need is the Chevron Seperation Console+ 2 copies of Attack Pattern Omega (and if you add the Tactical Captain's Attack Pattern Alpha).
In effect, you would get what would possibly happen if the Galaxy-X gets Saucer Separation.
In the end I ended up using 1 DHC, 2 Single Cannons, and a Quantum up front on my gal-x. Still gives me oomph on the front arc while not leaving me useless on the trip there. Similar in feel to a DBB,2 single, torp build but let me drop the beam cooldown for a tac team.
But give me saucer sep in it and I'll take the plunge and go full on DHC.
Edit: It's how I fly my Borasqu', too, but with a bio-neural.
I can understand it being subpar in pvp because of the narrower firing arc and slower turnspeed... >_>
Nothing wrong with a big ship with DHCs. It's just something equipped for heavy bombardment or for a simpler definition - demolishing targets that have 2 million odd hitpoints.
Escorts are supposed to cover the flanks of these 'dreadnaughts' allowing them to wade in and pew pew away.
In actual ESTF gameplay I'm not sure if I want to get a Gal-X for the heavy cannons, as tanking with just the frontal shield arc alone is not very viable against Invisible Torpedoes of Instant Doom.
I'm usually the distraction that flies fast and hard spamming BFaWs and tractor repulsors in the hope of catching aggro and shooting down those heavy torpedoes. I do not want to be the one that sits stationary in front of the cube and takes critical damage the moment the cube fires on it.
From what I've seen, fast cruisers and escorts survive much longer against cubes and sphere groups than the BortaS who just sits there firing heavy cannons and takes crippling damage once the shields go down. Which it inevitably does after a few seconds of combat despite EPtS, TSS, TT or whatever. Then the Invisitorp of Doom comes and boom!
