# 1 IDEA: A New Faction
05-01-2012, 10:38 AM
As the record goes, Cryptic does not believe that there is enough player interest for a third faction, such as Romulans. Also, Cryptic continues to lag behind in Klingon development, seeming to cite the low number of Klingon Players among other things. While I think that they might eventually get there with the Klingons, I believe that there is a better way to add content (by which I mean ships, missions, the works) to the game, mostly using assets that have already been installed.

Create a new "faction" that is really a collection of different factions you can chose from a drop down menu. This new faction will use existing ship models (will only need new bridge only interiors for some ships) and character models, and much like the Klingon faction does now, have a limited number of missions picked from either the existing Fed or Klingon missions that will serve to level the character up. Something like the Borg and Undine missions only need minimal re-write for use by other factions. And if cryptic doesn't feel like working on a KDF mission, now they can work on a Romulan one instead. Also, faction allies could use more missions, like Ferengi could use Fed missions.

Plus:
Lock box ships can go in the C-store for the new faction but can stay in lock boxes for FED and KDF as bonus For instance Ferengi would get a "base" D'kora class without all the bells for free, and then they can buy the lock box D'kora later. Lock boxes for the new factions could contain Fed or KDF ships instead. For example, a Romulan captain could get a lock box with a tactical retrofit defiant or something.

More choices for races. There are already models for Romulans, Hirogen, etc, why not just use them.

PvP support. More choices might mean more multi-faction battles. if more arenas were created with lower team numbers, you could probably do this, and even have multi-way battles, Feds vs KDF vs Romulan, etc.

Minus:
More half finished factions, but the Klingons survived this long, so I think any new Romulans and Cardies could as well.

TLDR: Star Trek is more than KDF and Fed. Its time to show that.

there is a huge difference between "Not believing" and "not caring".

They know that players want more factions, but they KNOW that they would have to design new playable races and all the programming needed in order to allow those players some form of customization. They know they would have to design a new homeworld for this faction. They know they would need to design numerous ships to fill out all 3 class types across all levels. They know they would need to write up missions for that faction, and design new worlds and areas for those missions.

THEY KNOW HOW MUCH TIME IT WOULD TAKE TO COMPLETE THAT.

It would require just as much time as it took just to develop what the Federation and Klingon sides have right now. They could release an entirely new game instead using that time. They know it's better to just focus on expanding what they can instead of putting off the entire game for months on end just to create new content.

Gradually adding in one NPC or one zone at a time every month would just exacerbate the issue, and lead to more whining about them releasing it faster.

Civilians ; Non-Starfleet & Non-KDF players being able to interact with the game and visit locations, but not necessarily get involved in the combat and general mechanics of levelling though ranks. Topics such as commerce, artistic, Terra Forming come to mind. Instead of commanding Star Ships they could get use regular transports to visit other worlds.

I wouldn't mind some new mini-faction, like the Klingons are now. With a couple of unique story arcs and the proper ships, uniforms, et cetera, they could leave it up to foundry authors to do the rest.

I would really like to see them develop one new faction a year: Romulan, Cardassian, and Ferengi. Those three would really round out the game.

We should get a full Klingon faction first though. Not equal to the Federation, obviously, but at least with enough storyline content to level from start to finish.

While, on the one hand, STO really does need at least one new faction, trying to add it while the two already present are hardly completed (in the case of the Klingons barely so) would be a major mistake. I don't blame Cryptic for this--Though owned by Perfect World, Cryptic itself is not a huge company and they have sverely limited manpower available. That and running an MMO is insanely labor-intensive.

One problem with that: Merging the KDF and Federation together would completely change the very foundation of this game's storyline. They're at war with each other once again. Suddenly they're gonna be at peace after 2 years? What will happen to the Klingon missions for the Federation?
