If you want a challenge, try flying an NX Escort at VA level. Space battles are so much more dramatic.

Oh yeah, that probably explains why the DarkFyre was getting beaten up so much more. I'm up at RAUH level, instead of Commander. So when I replay missions, those fights are also scaled up to match my rank level, regardless of what ship I'm in?

The trick to prevent overpowered enemies from being generated is to make the lower level player be the team leader and the admiral in the team matches "downwards". Set difficulty to advanced or elite to compensate for your more powerful gear.

Getting the lowbie to match up to VA simply doesn't work when said lowbie gets one shotted with impunity.

For added security, get the lowest level player to go into the mission first. Its not pretty when a bunch of level 38s (for example) meet level 50 Galors in a mission just because the VA Defiant Retrofit pilot decided to enter the mission area first without waiting for the rest.

If you're commanding a mixed bunch of ships with varied levels, such as 19, 24, 35 and 40, match the guy in the middle (the 24) for easier battle management. Oh and run it on elite, cos the 35 and 40 will be OP against lv 24 enemies.

Thank you. That is all extremly useful. And explains why my friend was getting one shotted on the ground. I thought those Klingons were being a lot tougher than they normally are (even though she hadn't scaled to match my level. But if they spawned at the higher level because I was team leader, that explains it).

I've commissioned an Olympic type ship, that has only been used in time travel missions, sticking to my own story of my characters, and a reasonable explanation why a Commander may be required in-between two vessels. So where i plan on taking Command of new ship when i reach captain, i hope to keep that for a long time before hopefully taking on a new cruiser cryptic may come up with in a year or two's time
I'm with you - I'm at L50 but still have my Rhode-Island class from when I was at the lower levels. Used that little ship for ages - actually skipped the Commander-level ships in favour of staying with my Rhode Island. Didn't actually 'decomission' it until I reached Captain, at which time temptation got the better of me and I purchased a Bellerophon class.

I use a Tier5 Bellerohpon now, although have fitted MkXI everything to my old Rhode Island and still bring her out for the occasional Starbase 24 or Mirror event mission.

I just just got promoted to captain, well I did so a couple of days ago. After spec-ing out my my new intrepid variant, organising my Bridge Officers, i havent had a chance to take it out for a spin yet. But I felt for my little Rhode Island Class being stripped and placed in dock. When i return to STO i plan on crusing through the romulan episodes in scientific glory in the USS Janeway......... yeah... ok... im rethinking the name :/

Most definitely will be keeping my little ship though

(Now if only they were able to make my first officer an Alternative playable character I could still find use for my spare ships)

I have a real love for my Olympic class, the uss Mary rose named after king Henry VIII flag ship, it's a real shame you can't lvl your ship with your character as oppose STO changing every 10 lvls to stay competitive

Oooooh, that would be a really fun function, such as making certain missions where your main needs to attend a diplomatic conference and your 1st needs to take your place until your main is done.

I only use one ship, a Star Cruiser. Was the last free ship I got. Being the most powerful I have had of the free ships, from the very, very, very quick leveling up this game allows, it is the only one I use.
Joined STO 20091001. Started playing STO 20120303. Yup, waited 2.5 years for them to go free-to-play. ; Christian, Borg, Time Lord, ninja! I am that hero!

I was relatively lucky, in that most of the ships I want to use are already available at max level(I don't see the point of pretending the game is TOS or TNG frankly, I want to enjoy the 2409 setting), but I still didn't like the idea of just switching between ships, so I have two characters;

My "Vice Admiral" tactical officer is played as a Commander in command of an assault team, part of the force of STAC(Starfleet Tactical Assault Command; I can't stand the revival of the MACOs either, leave the past in the past, or the holodeck, IMO) troops assigned to the USS Caestus(Heavy Escort Carrier). If I fancy switching to a cruiser or a more traditional escort, then I'm not actually captaining a different ship, my STAC team has just been attached to that ship for the mission/campaign at hand. I have a unique set of boffs for each ship, and I name my boffs in a "[rank] [surname]" format, so I just call one of them "Captain [surname]". You have to ignore some stuff("Hello Rear Admiral, Lower Half, can you help my colony fend off....blah blah" is one, and the boff named as the Captain calling me "sir"), but I find it's easier to suspend my disbelief in that manner than it is to constantly come up with reasons why I'm being switched about to command five different ships. The only ship that is actually "his" is the Acinaces, which is the team's Yellowstone runabout.

My Science officer is the Captain of the USS Aldrovandi, and that's the ship he'll fly for the forseeable. I had intended the Aldrovandi to be a Nebula-refit(well actually, I intended it to be a Vesta class, but Cryptic are still dragging their heels on that one *hint hint nudge nudge*), but the Odyssey is calling to me, so we'll have to see

I do hope that if and when they advance the levels further, they don't -force- us to become Fleet Admirals, I've no desire to be an Admiral at all, nevermind being forced to play the game with an AI-controlled fleet just to advance.
