I'm running Defiant refit am and using Quad cannons, 2x DHC's and a Quantum Torp fore with 3 x Turrets in rear. This I believe (from reading other threads) is optimum loadout for this ship as allows plenty of shield damage and a nasty punch to the hull with the Torp.
I dont PvP very much so this could all be crap but seems to work when I do.

All I can say, and some people would disagree...is. Having 4 cannons is like been able to do faster jabs in the boxing ring, the only problem is you don't have that right hook(Torp) to finish off your target.
3 cannons (2DHC, 1DC) + torpedo. It seems to me that DHC and DC fire on different cycles...so with one DC in the middle you have less power drain = more dps
for tactical captains i suggest 2DHC and a DBB for beam overload 3...gives a great alpha strike. had 100k crit once on a tactical cube (it had a mass of fire on my mark, sensor scan, AP beta, AP delta on it)
personally i fly with my sci 2 DHC+DC+quantum launcher and on my tactical 1 DHC+DC+DBB

he is right, consider that a torpedo can crit for 12k or more and uses no energy.paired with a high yield or spreadyou can deal massive amount of dmg. But the biggest problem for a 4 cannon built is the massive energy drain. A volley of those cannons drains 48 weapon energy...the last cannon has to deal with 36 less weapon energy, if you add now a distance penalty to it you as well fire blanks^^
Nonsense about the 4x DHC too much drain. If you take a closer look at the posts about powercycles/drains on them and/or try it out for yourself you will see that 4x DHC is no problem at all, add 3 turrets to that.

Actually, the only real thing that affects EPS/Nadion for Engi captains is Beam array (and beam overload) drain when broadsiding especially with 8 beams.
For Cannons it matters not so much, if at all. Same goes for EPS consoles.
The real problem is on a Defiant with 8 Tac Slots your going to have a couple free with an all Cannon build.
this, the power drain argument is rubbish as is the argument that you can't finish targets off. But you do seem to have a few wasted tac boff slots in an all cannon build that throwing on a single torp would remedy.
Personally I run x3 DHC, x1 Quantum torp and I find this setup to be very effective. Throw in a HY3 and a RF3 and I watch as the Cube I'm soloing in Cure Space Elite just melts before my eyes.
The fact of the matter is that people will argue until the end of time about power drain. There are those out there that say x3 DCs or x2 DHC, x1 DC are best because x3 DHC have too much power drain too while I think thats a load of bunk and x3 DHCs are best.
The truth is you want the torp for the kinetic damage. Pop a CRF3 and drop a shield facing, then THY3 him right up the impulse tail pipe and watch the fireworks. The cannon loadout is up to you though you should have at least x2 DHCs and make sure your cannons and turrets are all the same energy type. Also if you're gonna PvP stay away from plasma as endgame shields are mostly STF shields, and they have bonuses against plasma damage. Plasma is fine for STFs and PvE of course.
