Hola!

So, I've playing this game for about a month or two now and have mostly been doing task force stuff and sotry missions (not much PvP)... it is so easy to get to 50!!! I've been reading the forums and people recommend cannons over beams for damage, but I've had a lot of success with cannons. I just wanted to post my build and strategy to get some feedback:

Load out is:
3x Tetryon Beam, 1x Photon Torp
1x Photon Mine, 2xtetryon beam

I usually just strafe bigger targets to get all my beams firing at once. It rips apart shields and then I follow with torpedos and mines. Most people seem to have more hull than shield damage weapons, so once I get shields down they can finish off the target. I generally do not have power issues (not that I've noticed)...

So.... am I gimping myself? My skills are all beam/torp damage and eng/sci is survivability stuff.

You never said what ship your piloting, but i am assuming an escort. Escorts do really well with heavy cannons in stfs and there is a nice build for them in this section as well you might want to look for.

escorts are very nimble ships, thus most of their dps is in the front, 3 heavy cannons, 1 torp in front, 3 turrets in back (some times replacing a turret with a torp or mine depending on the pilot) and the great thing about stfs is you honestly dont have to move all that much so 90% of the time you will have everything in your arc.

as to if your gimping yourself, answer is, yes, dps wise you are. cannons pack a stronger punch, and with the turrets in back it adds to the frontal damage. However if beams works for you go right on ahead, just be aware your not pulling as much dps as you could.

This link -> escort builds <-
should give you all you need to know about escorts.

In my experience beams take too long to bring down a target to be used on an escort. Survival in an escort depends on killing your target quickly and moving on. They don't have the shield and hull strength to fly in lazy circles around a target firing broadside after broadside like cruisers do. I started out flying cruisers and held on to my beloved beam weapons and torpedoes as long as I could. But once you've outfitted your escort with 4 MKXII dual heavies and 3 MKXII turrets there's no going back.

The only time I saw an effective use of beams on an escort was when I was chasing down this FE in Kerrat. He was using (exploiting?) the fact that you cant point your ship straight down in STO and was spiraling down in circles. His beams did a number on my BoP, but my DHCs could never get on target. But unless you're gonna trickster your way thru PvP, you should go x3 cannons and x1 torp.
