The Independence Day method only works if you can survive the probes and the other weapons B'ger can throw at you.

I got a new plan for a youtube challenge. I might as well call it the Iron Eagle maneuver for how cheesy it sounds:
1) Attack normally with the team
2) Wait for giant torpedo to track ownship
3) Boost engines and lure torpedo out beyond 10km. Stay slightly faster than it so you 'fly' the torpedo
4) Use another engine booster boff ability and charge right at the Mothership
5) Fly around the mothership real quick in such a way the torpedo is headed towards the Mothership
6) Mothership blows itself to bits without torpedo hitting ownship which heroically flies away from the explosion
Q&A
Have I tried it before?
No but it's possible to outrun the giant torp using Evasive maneuvers
A cruiser is not a good choice for "Iron Eagling" as you need to attract aggro then GTHO of Dodge with torpedo in tow. Probably a great idea to do this with a character with MAX engine skills and a very high tactical cruising speed. Combat Impulse Engines, with high efficiency at high power levels, should be optimal.
Omega Set also boasts a high tactical speed and adds maneuverability under fire.
Attack Pattern: Omega, and copies thereof on the same escort vessel or BoP, should keep your speed permanently high.
What ship is recommended for this maneuver?
Any Raider or Escort type ship should suffice. Fleet Escort or Bird of Prey is a good choice as more engineering or universal boff slots generally means better tanking plus you can cram more engine boosting skills.
As aforesaid, multiple copies of APO will also keep your speed permanently high for the duration of the maneuver.
Polarize Hull 1 will also be helpful in the case of surviving the plasma spread attack or if APO expires halfway through and you get tractored.
Are there any c-store items that help?
Yes - Impulse Booster of the c-store Saber class may work for the initial evasive pattern or the final dash to plant the torpedo where it came from. It may save you one boff power. or your life.
Suffice to say engine battery would be needed too as the chase will be quite drawn out.
Addendum : Attack Pattern: Iron Eagle II
It's possible to get rid of the escape maneuver indicated in the initial proposal above.
Basically just lure the torpedo, immediately hit APO and start doing barrel rolls down the length of the Mothership. If I'm right, the torpedo uses a "pursuit curve" interception routine which means it basically points directly at where the player's ship is. Basically while barrel rolling, the torpedo should fly itself right into the hull of the Mothership.
Your Raider or Escort may not actually out-turn the torpedo but by virtue of superior straight line speed using APO + engine battery / evasive you should be covering much more ground than the torpedo as you turn. Ownship retains the tactical initiative so long as speed is higher than the torp.
