have been running escorts with cannons & turrets for a long time and thought it would make a nice change to switch to cruiser for a while. I am bit rusty when it comes to the inís & outís of beam arrays.

At what point does loss of energy become from too many beam arrays become apparent?

I have also heard that Fire at will is an ability to be avoided do itís energy waste and negligible effect. As I recall Beam over load can be quite effective when used with a weapons battery and Attack pattern Alpha.

6 I hear. My Recon Sci uses 5 + a torp.

You heard wrong. Fire at Will is pretty awesome, it just does something completely different than Beam Overload.

Fire At Will hits multiple things in rapid order. The more targets there are, the less damage each one takes. It is virtually guarenteed to take out any High Yield Plasmas, Tricobolts, or Mines. It is a VERY effective way to strip sheilds from probes and apply Attack Pattern Beta to many things at the same time. (perfect for setting up a bit torpedo salvo.)

Fire At Will also doesn't have the massive energy drain problem that Beam Overload has, which basically lets you front load youir damage, but then you'll be trickling out damage for a few seconds as you recover.

I keep weapon power maxed.

Good to know. Would you say 6 arrays would be safest maxiumum amount?

I've just switched over to 6 beam arrays on my Carrier as a sci officer, to see how it worked. I'm more of a balanced build, with a slight torp bias, but not min/maxed in any direction. My starting max power is only about 119/100, and power tends to drop into the 70's after sustained broadside fire. That said, it seems to be fairly effective and works quite well taking out probes in KASE while my parasites engage the cubes, transformers, and gate. I'm still looking for a fleet mate who can train emergency to weapons 3, which I think will improve things, combined with batteries, to make up for my current lack of power maintenance abilities. Pleased so far, after a few hours of play. Hope that helps.

5 beams is think is very close to peak efficiency. 6 is about the same DPS but should proc/crit more often and if you use BFAW then it'll provide even more DPS vs 5.

That's mainly why cruisers typically use 6 beams + 2 torps configs

7+ beams you have to start worrying about power loss and using buffs to increase weapons power and drain to remain viable. Without buffs 7+ is actually less DPS.
