Ships with a hangar bay or two are usually balanced somehow against other ships - they have less turn rate, or fewer weapon slots, or something like that. My beloved Atrox has 6 weapon slotes, where other ships of her size have 8.
And what did the Atrox Carrier give up compared to other science vessels? An Ensign bridge officer station and a weapon slot, quite an impressive trade-off for everything else it got.
I am really fond of carriers. I love my Atrox. I think more carriers and flight deck ships are good in this game.

Buit the Armitage is basically a C-store escort with a special console and a hangar bay on top of that... unless I did miss something, it looks like the addition of the hangar bay did not cost anything else in the design. So I am curious: What was the reasoning behind this?
I'd really love to know. Thanks!
Its based on the Original Akira Class, Heavy Escort, Gun Boat, Carrier... which was in fact a Heavy Escort Class, Gun Boat, Carrier all in one, and I was disappointed that the Akira in STO was missing these Additions, But we now have them and all on a T5 Version... which im very happy with
And I think the Designer of the Akira Class Ship "Alex Jaeger" made an Awesome Design, and possibly one of the best designs for a Starship in Star Trek
This T5 Akira is not totally Overpowered, the Hull is quite weak as with other Escorts... and does not have much in the way of support for Science and Engineering officers to keep her afloat... But in the right hands she can can be a very potent weapon and kept alive
In PvP, she can deal out great amount of damage as with any other T5 Escort, and with the Thunderchild Point Defence Console in combination with the Torpedo Point Defence Console, it can be a somewhat OP Combination in both PvP and PvE, IF and only IF used at the right time, otherwise they dont have much of an effect on full Shields...
Again in PvP, the T5 Akira is a Great Hit and Run Attack Platform, with Maneuverability and Speed on her side to hit the Target quickly with a great amount of damage then to withdraw quickly if taking damage
Fighters come in handy to distract Targets in Both PvE and PvP before you make your attack Run, I have not messed around with the Shield Repair shuttles or any of the others, only have the Advanced Peregrine Attack Fighters...
I have done a ton of STFs, and she flies great in all of them, tho you do need a real tank to take in coming fire as she will not be able to take much punishment all on her own, if you have the right skills you can tank a little but not as long as a Cruiser
I had set my ship up with 2 forward beam arrays, 2 forward Dual beam arrays and 3 rear Beam arrays... used this set up in PvP and ended up getting 43 kills to 0 deaths and that works quite well...
now tho I have a new set up with 2 forward dual heavy Cannons, 1 forward dual beam array and 1 forward Torpedo tube with 3 rear 360 degree Turrets... used that in a few STFs so far and works great... very nice DPS... have not tried it in PvP yet tho
But as I said im very pleased with the T5 Akira (Armitage) Class, its everything I had hoped to see from a T5 Akira

Some say that they have the subjective impression that the turn rate might be slightly slower. Also, don't sci vessel have a damage bonus per weapon? The Atrox doesn't.

Roughly 8 points of turn rate, IIRC. And Sensor Analysis. Same deal the Vo'Quv made.
I am not saying that it's necessarily a fair deal. But the Armitage loses nothing. Two Wrongs don't make a Right.
I don't know how it stacks up in PvP, but compared to say the defiant retro, I am not impressed. If I had to choose one, I would stay with the defiant. You can't run the more powerful skills as you could with the defiant and those little fighters don't make up for that, IMO.
In every game I have played people have always whined about every new item being OP. They are rarely correct and in the fullness of time this will likely be no different.
I get that. What what does it have less than an MVAE in exchange for that hangar bay?
I dont see why anything should be taken away for the hanger bay, if she had 2 hanger bays then yes something should be dropped for 2 but she only has one
The Akira has a Though Deck Hanger, not a typical hanger that you would find on other ships, so not much at all is added to the weight of the ship, it is pretty much just a normal deck but just cleared out to make out a hanger so if anything less weight has been taken away from the Akira
She is an Escort Carrier Gun Boat... pretty much a Multi Purpose Ship able to full fill any role that is required of her, so she needs to have Maneuverability, Speed and Firepower all in one ship
She only has 200 Crew, quite small crew for a ship of that size and her capabilities, in STO she only has 6 Fighters, these are one manned Fighters...
in Star Trek Lore the Akira would have around 30 support and fighter Craft, for various roles from Salvage/Repairs, Search and Rescue, and small Shuttles and Shuttle fighter Craft which would be around 18 of them alone, the Akira could Carry a number of different Sized Shuttles and included 2-4 Runabouts all depending on her needs for what ever mission she was faced with
I think the STO T5 Akira has already made alot of sacrifices already compared to the real thing without impacting on her performance in combat
If you nerf the T5 Akira in any way, compared to other Escorts then the Akira would become disadvantaged and would require a Buff in another area, and this would change her Class to something else that she is not... the Akira is classed as an Heavy Escort Carrier Gun Boat... The Carrier part is a Light Carrier not a full blown Carrier
and if anything gets changed then the only thing I could see change for maneuverability would be an increase in Hull Points to increase her survivability which then would make her a Cruiser which she is not, even tho she is a Cruiser Sized Escort...
So at that point anything taken away would require something else added to the T5 Akira to make her feasible in combat again
and we could go around in circles all day swapping this for that and that for this ect

Dear sophlogimo,
What did the Defiant-R give away in exchange for it's higher than average turn rate in addition to the cloaking console?
What did the MVAE give away in exchange for a multifunctional console that has pets in addition to a special mode for the ship?
Let me know if you'd like me to post the laundry list of things the Odyssey Cruisers get.
