Hi there,

I suggest: just start playing. The Tutorial is done quite good.
The Interface and keylayout are somewhat "old" and sloppy, but you get used to it.

If you like the first 10 levels of the game, I suggest buying one month of playtime, the perks while leveling are quite good:
More Inventory/Bank Space
several Respecc Tokens (which you need to change your skills)

You get a new ship every ten levels, and it is absolutely viable to change shipclass everytime to get used to the differences (slow but heavy armoured cruisers vs. fast hard hitting escorts e.g.)
Career Selection doesn't mean you're fixed to a specific role, so feel free to try out which "playstyle" you like most (though differences are rather small in comparison to other games).
Character Customization is a plus for me, so take your time with it (maybe select Alien, it lets you change a lot of settings in rather extrem ways).

I suggest to not care for buying anything from the exchange before you reach level 50, you get enough while leveling via the episodes.

Welcome Starbuck. Having played BSG online I'd say you may have a few gripes about STO's but quite a few good points to outweigh them. Don't lose you BSG login though. I still launch my viper from time to time when I want fast paced space combat and true pvp.

I'd suggest to do whatever you want that sounds fun. Remember to relax and enjoy it, don't fall into working at it.

If you want a bit of a starting challenge, try to figure out how to add the the channel "TenForwardForum" to your chat window. Hint: start by right-clicking.

Oh, one more advice:

learn it!

And btw: Which one is better male or female starbuck?
I can't decide, female is tough badass angel, but male is A-Team :/

Welcome. Enjoy getting up to speed. I started in Feb after lurking for a while and gotta say part of the fun is figuring everything out.

That said, these forums, stowiki.org, stoacademy.com (where the skill planners are) and podcasts/youtube are your friends.

Good luck!
