Engage them from the farthest distance possible (by the time they close the distance they'll be dead)
If possible, team up with at least one other player (even if just moving around together), because two weapons firing at the same target drop foes faster.
Stay away from other players who just run-n-gun aggro'ing lots o bad guys then purposefully leading them to other players just to watch the other players die.

Since you don't accrue any reduction in HP or abilities when you die and getting back to the location where you died is super easy I don't worry about dying. For me it's a street fight. However I try to mop up whatever I engage. I don't drag mobs all over the map. If I go to deep and get overwhelmed and die oh well. It's after all just a game.
