The whole "StarFleet changed the uniform code..." was just another Cryptic brainfart to inject the standard, cookie-cutter, MMO customization, mechanics into a game that shouldn't have them. The point of a uniform is to outwardly convey discipline, unity, and professionalism. The masses look for the guy in uniform, to tell them what to do, in times of crises. If everybody is just wearing whatever they want, then it's not a uniform. Just give everyone a combadge, and let them wear whatever they want. Matter of fact, why stop there? Lets just let everybody be whatever rank they wanna be, too. Oh, right. Everybody already is an Admiral.

My opinion on this is not a popular one. But here goes.

In the early days of the game the dev's stated that they had a preference toward the TOS episodes. TOS uniforms followed a general standardization but allowed their individual starbases, ships, etc. to use their own insignia and presumable their own uniform standard as well. Combine that with the clear "captains discretion" shown on some episodes of TNG, DS9, VOY, Generations, especially when visiting a different command like when Sisko goes to SFA.

Take that along with the uniform transition per the Path to 2409, I don't think it's unheard of that Starfleet would move away from the military-esque standardized uniforms to a more relaxed, non-military, uniform policy as long as it conformed with some sort of general guidelines that Starfleet imposes.

So in other words, individual captains and commands can have their own uniform code.

The whole uniform stance the game has taken really throws me, it is totally an oxymoron as 'uniform' means remaining the same in all cases and at all times. That being said, I use the Starfleet Academy instructors uniforms mostly now, I like my pips on my collar.

A few still wear First Contact uniforms as well.

I cannot overstate how much I would enjoy seeing one uniform adopted. I worry I may not like it, but I'd at least be happier.

Thats a lot of work though (easy though it would be). Cryptic doesn't seem to give such jobs to interns unfortunately.

Not only are they dull, they look like they're made out of plastic, and would be very uncomfortable. TNG season 1 Uniforms look fugly too, but at least they look wearable. The Jupiter Uniforms are cool, but they're almost too cool, they look more like Militarised Leather Jackets. (Someone make a videogame about a civilization of super advanced biker gangs now!) So they don't feel very "Treky", but I do like them.

Uniforms need to be more clothy or comfortable looking. :\

I disagree. I love the leather look. Could just be because i'm German but i think it looks 10 times better than those one piece cloth jumpsuits that were used throughout the series. Personally i think most of the costume designers outside of some of the later movies were absolutely horrible at their job or just had no idea how real people dress. The tight fitting leather look of some of the sierra uniforms (the ones dominated by black) says to me still formal looking and easily kept up but also has the durability to actually survive an away mission. Also love the rank pip placement where you can actually see it. those little collar pips never made any sense to me. If you were approaching an unknown officer you would have to be in their face before you could confirm if you outrank them or vice versa

Oh Noes!

By the time of TNG, the Federation no longer enslaved animals for food purposes ("Lonely Among Us"), so I doubt they would wear their hides. That's more of a Klingon thing...

Sooo that might explain why a lot of the federation personal wear similiar uniforms on starbases, they might be the ones designated to deal with civilian inquiries. Disciplne and proffessionalism are instilled in them with training. They're unified by their ideals.

That argument has played in my head before.. Federation officials, back and forth, debating the positives and negatives of both sides.. The federation, with an open mind, finally come to the decision to go forward with the uniform policy change. Especially due to observing all of the positive benefits one of the aliens races had undergone existing with such policies in their own world.

I was very irrated about not having standard uniforms too, but I moved on.. I'd prefer there be a standard uniform but I don't see that happening..

I didn't say they didn't look cool, they do, they just don't look very Trekky. They look more like something out of Battlestar Galactica or the Peacekeepers in Farscape. The Sierra and Antares have the same kind of look, but they don't have the distinction of being cool.

I do agree with you on the rank however.

So inhumane superweapons, mass murder, and canon nonsense is okay, but speedos are too much for some people.
