LOL, "so narrow in its role its hard to be effective" with the most flexible ship in the entire game? 3x3x3 consoles, total universal BOFF layout (at a cost of fewer total BOFF slots than normal ships).

I've been able to kill players in alpha strikes with my B'Rel torpedo boat. Not hardly an "annoyance" when one of the ships of your team suddenly blows up from a hail of torpedoes and getting finished off by a Bio-Neural Warhead, and if that didn't kill them, hopefully the Tricobalt Mine will. Then I zip right on by and dip back into cloak after 3 seconds of my last torpedo firing.

In STFs, the rules to surviving in a BOP are the same as any other Escort. You can still dish out alot of hurt with it, and in a B'Rel torpedo boat build, your torps will rip apart alot of Borg NPCs and structures.

The B'Rel like other BOPs share the same strengths and vulnerabilities. Flexibility, weaker hulls than Escorts, weaker shields, best handling, Battle Cloaks (or Enhanced Battle Cloaks with the B'Rel).

Like other BOPs, the B'Rel needs an experienced hand to build it up, outfit it, and come up with a useful BOFF layout, and of course, fly it. The weak shields and hull are not receptive to novices in STFs and PVP.

My point is if you build a torpedo boat, which is why you have a brel...then its interesting to see how much dps you will do on average...the timing has to be near perfect..i do nt see them in pvp...i tried mine in stfs.....its sucked..i dont claim to be the best..but please send a tell to @cptcisco for me and show me in a pvp or stf how well you do. Other than some well timed videos in youtube I just havent seen it.

I don't make videos for anyone.

There is however a thread about B'Rel torpedo boats.

I will say this though. It takes alot more practice to get the feel and style right of a B'Rel torpedo boat than anything else in the game. You are flying around 100% cloaked (if possible), no shields, exposed hull. It's the very definition of a Hammer armored with eggshells.

When I first started experimenting and trying the torpedo boat out in PVP, it was very underwhelming. But I kept at it, tweaking my layout, refining my strikes, as well as timing them. You will be rewarded with a playstyle that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the game, to include even other BOPs.

Again, the style isn't for everyone, but I keep one of my KDF toons with a B'Rel Torpedo Boat.

Also with the B'Rel, you can still arm it traditionally (Energy Weapons + Torp, or all Energy Weapons), and still be effective.

As long as you realize the limitations of the BOP and play with that in mind, then you can do alot of things. Certain specialist ships will of course be better in a given function they are designed and laid out for. But the B'Rel, like other BOPs, let you change your setup whenever it suits you. If you want to play a traditional TAC BOP, so be it. If you want to play a SCI heavy BOP, so be it. You aren't locked out due to the 3x3x3 consoles and total Universal BOFF stations.

Torpedo boats aren't about DPS. They dish out massive burst damage. Believe me, I'm as obsessed with DPS like all the other escort pilots out there and fly all cannons on my Fed character.

The B'rel torp boat is very successful as a support/clean-up ship. Once your team have hammered away at your targets shields, the barrage of torpedoes can easily overcome what's left.

Even by yourself, you can still be successful. A fully buffed quantum torpedo high yield spread should be able to take out or severely weaken a shield face. Even more so if you couple it with some drain abilities. Follow up with a Bio-Neural Warhead (shields and an antiproton turret), Breen Cluster Torpedo, and a Hargh'Peng. I've caught many ships with the Hargh'Peng secondary explosion while they were trying to run away from me.

Obviously, with the high burst damage, it's best to attack your target when they aren't expecting it. For example, hitting a ship in a group of enemies that is preoccupied with targeting one of your team mates. Usually a perfect time to attack, even if no one has damaged them yet, because they most likely have some of their offensive and defensive abilities on cooldown.
