So currently I've got two characters on my account; both Federation. One is Tactical, the other Engineering. I'm currently racking up my Dilithium Reserves as I had intended to purchase all four of the Tier #5 ships for both Tactical and Engineering respectively.

Chose the Patrol Escort and Star Cruiser with the free token (given at level 40). Working my Dilithium up for the Advanced Escort and the Assault Cruiser. Then I got thinking, what's the point of using up dilithium for these when I can (once purchased) fly around in the fleet ships (I don't believe they're specific for fleet combat, right?).

Anyway, I went to my teams fleet starbase earlier and looked over the ships. I'm not sure what's going on with them. Lets take the Patrol/Blockade Escort (Hermes Type (even though it shows up as the Maelstrom)). You've got the standard, original one (which you can, if desired, purchase at level 40). Then you've got the retrofit version, and then you've got the fleet version.

I can understand the fleet version (it's the most powerful one of the three) but I don't understand the reason for the retrofit version. It's the middle-man. Why would anyone purchase a retrofit ship when their fleet counterpart is far more impressive (in shields, weapons, boff slots ect).

And I am also curious as to why some ships (Constitution Cruiser, Prometheus, Excelsior ect) don't have fleet versions? Anyone answer these queries? I'm stumped and can't work out Cryptics logic here.

I'm not in a fleet so I don't know for sure, but I think that you get a discount on the fleet version if you own the retrofit-variant.

Prior to Lockboxes and S6, the Retrofit ships were the best of the best. Now they are kind off obsolete, due to lockbox ships and fleet variants. To not piss off all the players who bought those ships you get the fleet varaint for something around 500-ish currencies (someone correct me, please?).

As to why no T5 connie and the like: I don't know. I guess they don't want those "old" ships in T5/fleet variants or something like this. I personally would be for a retrofit-variant for every ship since it bugs me that I only see oddys/armitage on fed side and bortas/that other ugly thing on kling side. I actually rarely see any Raiders or even escorts in endgame-actions anymore o.o

I suppose, for people that have purchased the retrofit variants of these ships, it's nice that they don't have to pay out the full sum for the fleet variants, but then, in my case, there is little point me getting both the standard Tier #5 ships cause they'll both be mute come the fleet versions of them. Am I right in thinking that?

I can understand the Constitution and Miranda, and maybe (to an extent) the Excelsior, but can't understand the lack of Prometheus.

Heh, it's done that way because people like to play to win, and the Oddy comes with the necessary slots and such to do that. Personally, I dislike the Odyssey and will be sticking to the Assault Cruiser and Patrol Escort come my fleet purchases.

No Connie because CBS has told Cryptic time and again that there will be NO T5 Connie.

As for why no Prometheus? Because if you want a stronger Advanced Escort you are expected to get the Multi-Vector from the C-Store and they probably do not want to allow you to use its console a fleet-variant of the ship because it would make for an absolutely massively powerful ship which they now reserve mostly for Lock-Boxes.

The Patrol Escort also used to be called the Fleet Escort so I guess they decided that it should get the most boost here because of that.

There IS a fleet Prometheus: http://www.stowiki.org/Fleet_Advanced_Escort

No Connie's already covered. Old decree from CBS that they still aren't flexible on. The Ask Cryptic answer on it sounds like they might be looking for a middle ground to get a fleet cruiser, but who knows if that's the case. Or, if it happens, what form that middle ground will take if they are.

Excelsior, Galaxy-X, etc are a more interesting question. They didn't give fleet versions of ships that have special abilities that can't be removed (i.e. consoles). The Galaxy-X and Guramba have their lances, and the Excelsior has its transwarp. Unless they develop a workaround so the special powers can be tied to the C-store version but portable to the fleet version, probably not happening.

As for the three patrol escorts: Remember, the fleet version's going to set you back 2000 Zen. There are a lot of people who play without spending money, or at least not that much money. The refit version gives an ship very similar to the Armitage without a hangar that isn't behind the paywall.
